SENIOR SENDOFF
The Mountain Lion football program and head coach
Cody Edwards will recognize eight seniors Saturday prior to the game: kicker
Kenyon Bowyer, defensive lineman
Jaylen Dollar, defensive lineman
Michael Herbert, running back
Rashad Luckey-Dowdy, wide receiver
Rodney Mike, defensive back
Corey Radcliff, defensive lineman
Ethan Rennels and offensive lineman
Antonio Smith. Bowyer has connected on 28-of-29 extra points this season while making four field goals, transferring in from Eastern Michigan. Dollar has appeared in 17 games over the last two seasons, racking up 86 tackles and 6.0 tackles for loss. Herbert, a transfer from Limestone, has contributed 29 tackles and a pair of sacks this fall. Luckey-Dowdy has 334 rushing yards, including 100 yards versus West Virginia Wesleyan, and two touchdowns. Mike is coming off a career game at Wheeling with three catches for 59 yards. Overall, Mike has seven catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. Radcliff has become one of the MEC's best defensive backs in his only season in the Maroon and Gray. The Tusculum transfer leads the league with five interceptions. Rennels is near the top of the conference in tackles for loss as his TFL count of 7.0 is tied for seventh in the MEC. Smith has started all nine games along the offensive with seven starts coming at either left or right guard.
HOUSE CALL
CU recorded its second defensive touchdown of the season in Saturday's 26-21 defeat at Wheeling. Junior defensive back
Nehemiah Scott intercepted a pass and ran it back 80 yards for Concord's first defensive score since Radcliff's pick six in the opener at UVa.-Wise. The 80 yards covered by Scott was the longest defensive touchdown for the Mountain Lions since Kevin Howard's pick six against Wheeling in 2022 that went for 81 yards. Saturday was Scott's third career interception. He had picks last year versus West Virginia Wesleyan and Fairmont State. The Richmond, Virginia native is fifth in the MEC with 78 tackles.
STOP 'EM SHORT
One of the bright spots for the Mountain Lions at Wheeling was the red zone defense. The Cardinals had seven trips inside the 20-yard line, but Concord's defense only surrendered one touchdown. Wheeling settled for four field goals with sophomore linebacker
Xavier Ellison blocking a fifth attempt. On the season, CU is sixth in the MEC in red zone defense (76.7 percent). However, in 43 opponent red zone trips, the Mountain Lions have only allowed 25 touchdowns (25-of-43/58.1 percent). Fairmont State enters the weekend eighth in the MEC in red zone defense, giving up a score on 82.2 percent of opponents' red zone tries, including 26 touchdowns on 45 trips.
RUN-PASS OPTION
For the second time in the last three games, sophomore quarterback
Tyler Mizzell led CU in rushing with 73 yards on eight attempts. The Denver, North Carolina native is up to 370 yards on the ground this season with an average of 5.7 yards per rush. Mizzell enters Week 10 of the season just 110 yards behind Charleston's Ean Hamric for the MEC lead in rushing among quarterbacks. Over the last three games, Mizzell has rushed for 277 yards, and thanks to his running threat he ranks fifth in total offense yards per game at 309.6 (368.4 passing/41.2 rushing) in Division II. Because of Mizzell's escapability from the pocket, the Mountain Lions have only surrendered six sacks, fewest in the MEC, and tied for third fewest in Division II.
GIVE IT UP, GET IT BACK
Concord goes up against Fairmont State who has the most explosive offense in the conference, but also one of the vulnerable defenses in the MEC. Fairmont State is first in the MEC in points per game (35.1) and total offense (492.3). The Fighting Falcons offense is paced by a ground game that ranks fourth in Division II. FSU clips off 251.1 rushing yards per game. However, Fairmont State gives up the second-most points in the conference (35.7 per game) and surrenders 221.7 rushing yards per game, seventh in the league. The Mountain Lions come into Saturday's game off two of their best rushing performances of the season, 232 yards at Glenville State and 192 versus West Virginia Wesleyan. CU rolled up 146 yards at Wheeling. Concord has 100 or more yards rushing in five straight games, the first such streak since the final six games of the 2022 season.
DYNAMIC DUO
The powerful Fairmont State rushing attack is spearhead Leonard Farrow, the MEC's leading rusher at 1,309 yards, as well as LeJay Hatcher who has rolled up 543 yards. Farrow has seven touchdowns of at least 60 yards this year, including scores of 75 and 80 yards in last week's 45-44 overtime win at West Liberty. While the Mountain Lions will have their work cut out trying to stop the Fairmont State run, Concord has been better against the run as of late. Concord surrendered just 109 and 152 yards against West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling in each of the last two weeks. CU's run defense ranks fourth in the MEC, allowing 174.9 yards per game. While Farrow does have four games over 150 rushing yards, he has also been held under 65 yards three times this year.
YOUNG ARMS
Mizzell and Fairmont State sophomore Nino Marzullo will be showcased Saturday as two of the top three quarterbacks in the MEC. Mizzell leads the conference with 2,416 passing yards which also ranks 11
th in Division II. Mizzell is tied with Marzullo for passing touchdowns in the MEC with both signal callers tossing 21 scores this fall. They are also tied for 14
th in Division II in passing touchdowns. Mizzell is right in the mix for MEC Offensive Player of the Year while Marzullo has followed up his MEC Freshman of the Year season with another strong campaign, despite Fairmont State running the ball on 70 percent of its offensive snaps. Marzullo has been on a tear as of late with 13 of his 21 passing touchdowns coming in the last four weeks. Meanwhile, Mizzell has two or more touchdowns in seven of nine games this fall.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
9- Concord (four) and Fairmont State (five) have combined to play in nine one-possession games this season.
61- New season-long and career-long punt for redshirt freshman
Zach Moyer last week.
84- Yards needed by Mizzell to record the eighth 2,500-yard passing season in program history.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING FALCONS
With all of Fairmont State's explosiveness on the ground, Winston Page is turning in a stellar season at receiver as Marzullo's top target. Page has 34 receptions for 525 yards and six touchdowns. Tyrees Smith leads FSU with 87 tackles while Montel Sims has pitched in 75 stops. In the last two weeks, Fairmont State has allowed a total of 640 rushing yards against Charleston and West Liberty. Overall, FSU has allowed five 200-yard games on the ground this season. The Fighting Falcons have two of the best specialists in the MEC. Ethan Vargo-Thomas leads the MEC with a punting average of 45.4 yards. Emmanuel Richardson is 6-for-7 on field goal tries.
