ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team lost 89-63 to Winston-Salem State Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Carter Center.
CU (3-2) kept pace with Winston-Salem State for the first eight minutes as a three-pointer from freshman guard
Cadence Blackburn tied the game at 7-7 at the 6:36 mark, then a jumper from junior guard
Kiley Smich cut Concord's deficit to 15-14 with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter.
From there, Winston-Salem State went on a 10-2 run to close the opening period.
The Mountain Lions went shot-for-shot with WSSU in the second quarter as five straight points from senior guard
Kennedy Scales reduced the advantage to 33-30 with the 5:28 remaining until halftime.
But again, a late run by the Rams push the lead to 44-34 at the break.
Concord was only able to cut the deficit back to 10 points once more, 46-36, one minute into the third quarter as CU fell in the final game before Thanksgiving.
With a flurry of scoring in the second half, sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs netted 19 points. Smich played a solid floor game with 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Scales scored all nine of her points in the first half.
Senior forward
Olivia Ziolkowski had eight points and six rebounds.
The Mountain Lions travel to Ferrum Monday, December 1 to wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule.
