Concord Falls at Ferrum

FERRUM, Va.- The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup against Ferrum 75-59 on Monday night at Swartz Gymnasium.
 
The first quarter started with a layup from senior guard Kennedy Scales to open the scoring. A pair of free throws from sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs put CU up 4-2, however this was the last time they held the lead as the Panthers caught fire. Ferrum ended the first quarter with a 20-10 lead, shooting 50 percent from the field.
 
At halftime, Ferrum opened up a 38-24 lead.
 
Despite trailing by 15 points early in the quarter, CU went on an 8-0 run to make the deficit just seven points, 40-33. The run included a pair of crucial three-pointers from freshman guard Nasiya Smith. Concord ended the quarter on a 10-4 stretch, to make it 51-45 entering the final 10 minutes of regulation. Junior guard Alexis Frazee and freshman guard Lacee Smith hit back-to-back three-pointers in the middle of the latter spurt while senior forward Abbie Smith had a late stick back to get the deficit to two possession after three quarters.
 
Concord shot 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from the field in the quarter including making 4-of-8 attempts from three-point land.
 
Despite the promising third, the momentum did not carry over to the fourth quarter. Ferrum scored a game-high 24 points in the quarter.
 
Scales tied her season high with 12 points, and Frazee joined her as the only other Mountain Lion in double figures with 11 points. A. Smith brought just missed a double-double with nine points (3-for-4 shooting) and 11 rebounds. Scales and A. Smith each dished out four assists to lead the squad. Senior forward Olivia Ziolkowski tallied three blocks in the contest.
 
Concord heads to Institute, West Virginia to face West Virginia State in the Mountain East Conference opener 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
