FANTASTIC FOUR
The Mountain Lions return to the semifinal round of the conference tournament for a second straight year after outlasting West Liberty in five sets Thursday night in the MEC Quarterfinals. It was the second straight year that CU defeated West Liberty in the quarterfinal round, both in five sets. Concord is making its first consecutive appearances in the conference tournament semifinals since 1986 and 1987—the only time Concord won a conference tournament championship was in 1987. More history was made at the MEC Quarterfinals as the semifinal round features four MEC South teams—Concord, Charleston, West Virginia State and West Virginia Wesleyan. It's first time in the divisional era of the MEC—since 2020—that the semifinals are four teams from the same division.
RISING TO THE OCCASION
While CU's all-conference players, First Team All-MEC performer junior outside hitter
Meg Williams and Second Team All-MEC performer junior libero
Allie Davis, were in top form against West Liberty—Williams had a season-best 20 kills and Davis supplied 28 digs, her second-highest total of the season—junior middle hitter
Jasmine Anderson and freshman middle hitter
Addison Adkins came to the forefront. Anderson just missed her first career double-double with nine kills and a career-high 10 blocks. It was the first 10-block game for a Mountain Lion since September 2016. Of CU's 13 blocks, sophomore right side
Maddie Stull was in on five stuffs to assist Anderson. Adkins supplemented the offense behind Williams with a career-best 17 kills. Adkins was named to the All-MEC Freshman Team earlier this week.
THIRD TIME IS A CHARM
Concord dropped both regular-season meetings to Charleston as it fell in four sets on the road in early October. The Mountain Lions were swept at home by UC two weeks ago. Williams tallied one of her 12 double-doubles for the season at UC with 10 kills and 14 digs. Junior outside hitter
Chloe Thompson had a team-best 12 kills while junior setter
Paige Richmond supplied 16 assists. No Mountain Lion registered double-digit kills November 7 at the Carter Center. Richmond did have 12 assists while sophomore setter
Haley Sweeney notched 10 assists. Though Concord is 2-50 all-time versus Charleston, this current group of Mountain Lions have beaten the Golden Eagles, a five-set victory last season at home.
GETTING THROUGH THE WALL
Charleston possesses one of the best defenses in the MEC, holding opponents to a .143 hitting percentage which ranks second in the conference. With the strong team defensive numbers, the Golden Eagles are only sixth in the MEC in blocks per set (1.97) and seventh in digs per set (15.6). In the lone set CU took off Charleston this season, the Mountain Lions hit .239 in the opener at UC. And in the six sets that the Golden Eagles have won, CU has hit below .130 in five of those games. The battle at the net could be pivotal with CU's Anderson ranking third in the conference in blocks per set (1.14). Adkins is eighth (0.87) while Charleston is led by Kate Strong in blocks per set (1.06). She is sixth in the MEC.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
The best setter in the MEC resides at Charleston with Abby Avila averaging 9.29 assists per set. The First Team All-MEC selection ranks top 50 nationally in assists per set. Divine Muo led the Golden Eagles to victory at the Carter Center with a career-best 18 kills. She added another 18-kill outing in the quarterfinal win over Wheeling in which UC reverse swept the Cardinals. Sophia Knowles teams up with Strong at the net as she has collected 262 kills and 71 blocks. UC has been in the MEC Semifinals in four of the last five seasons.
