Concord Edged at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team lost on the road to West Virginia State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Dickerson Stadium.

The Mountain Lions (7-5-3, 6-3-3 MEC) outshot WVSU (11-3-1, 10-1-1 MEC) by three (11-8), but was unable to find a second-half goal after West Virginia State took a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute.

The Yellow Jackets scored in the run of play in the 17th minute to snatch an early lead. However, CU tied the game in the 21st minute when a clearance off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Stephanie Tovar was errant, and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

The third and final goal of the first half was also off a set piece when West Virginia State blasted a free kick into the back of the net from just inside 25 yards.

Seven of the 11 shots for CU came in the first half as sophomore midfielder Tiana Campbell smacked the cross bar with a shot in the 15th minute before the rebound came to freshman midfielder Daisy Cook who went wide with her attempt.

Perhaps the best chance in the second half for the Mountain Lions came when Cook's shot from the six-yard box sailed high from a corner kick.

Campbell (four) and sophomore forward Ailsa Swinburne (three) combined for seven shots in the contest. Half of Campbell's shots were on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Isabelle Melton made two saves.

Sunday's result clinches the MEC South for West Virginia State while Concord stays in second place alone, three points ahead of Charleston after UC's 1-0 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan.

CU plays its final home regular-season game of the fall when it hosts Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Callaghan Stadium.
