ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team rolled to a 5-0 win over West Liberty Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium on Senior Day.
CU (7-4-2, 6-2-2 MEC) leaned on sophomore midfielder
Tiana Campbell early in the match as Campbell notched her eighth career brace—and fourth of the season—in the first 21 minutes of the game. Campbell's first goal was a strike from just outside the box that snuck inside the far post for her eighth goal of the season in the 15
th minute.
The Plymouth, England native then stepped up to the penalty spot in the 21
st minute after a handball on the Hilltoppers (2-11, 1-9 MEC), and found the back of the net. Campbell's initial attempt was saved, but she followed up the rebound and doubled the Concord lead.
Though the Mountain Lions snapped off 25 shots in the first half, CU settled for a 2-0 halftime lead.
After assisting on Campbell's first goal, freshman midfielder
Daisy Cook scored her own goal in the 64
th minute as she took a cross from sophomore forward
Ailsa Swinburne and headed in her third score of the fall.
Sophomore midfielder
Stephanie Tovar rocketed home her second goal of the campaign in the 71
st minute on a double assist from sophomore defender
Ella Rowell and senior forward
Caitlin Webster. The assist was Webster's MEC-leading fifth.
Freshman midfielder
Molly Watters completed the score sheet for Concord in the 80
th minute with a shot that hit off the inside of the left post before crossing the goal line.
Campbell's two goals propelled her to the MEC lead in goals scored this fall.
The Mountain Lions took 43 shots in the game, a season high, with 23 coming on goal. Both West Liberty shots were off target.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Isabelle Melton spent the first 85 minutes in goal before senior
Abigail Bruce came on to finish off the shutout.
Concord welcomes Charleston to Callaghan Stadium 1:00 p.m. Wednesday for a battle for second in the MEC South Division.
