ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw versus the University of Charleston Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
CU (7-4-3, 6-2-3 MEC) overcame deficits of 1-0 and 3-2 to earn the point against Charleston (6-5-3, 5-3-3 MEC).
The Golden Eagles scored in the fourth minute after a giveaway in the back. However, the Concord responded quickly as sophomore midfielder
Tiana Campbell headed in her 10
th goal of the season on a cross from senior forward
Caitlin Webster in the 13
th minute.
Webster was in the middle of the scoring in the 19
th minute as another cross from the right side of the penalty box from the Sydney, Australia native landed at the feet of sophomore midfielder
Stephanie Tovar who punched in her third goal of the year to put Concord up 2-1.
Just 58 seconds after the Tovar goal, UC struck again to tie the game. And a turning point came in the 22
nd minute as sophomore goalkeeper
Maddie Loughborough saved a Charleston penalty kick to keep the game level.
Like the first half, the Golden Eagles scored early in the second half as a shot got past Loughborough to push Charleston back up, 3-2, in the 51
st minute.
But, junior defender
Katie Garratt made sure that Concord walked away with at least one point as her free kick from approximately 40 yards sailed into the goal in the 69
th minute. Garratt went for goal on two more free kicks in the final 20 minutes, but missed the target.
Loughborough was required to make two more saves in the final 10 minutes to keep the game square at 3-3.
The Mountain Lions outshot Charleston 16-10 in the game, but it was UC that had more shots on goal, 8-5. Loughborough made five saves in the game.
Webster tallied her second career two-assist game. Â
Campbell led CU with four shots in the contest. Garratt and Tovar both had three shots with all three of Garratt's coming in the second half.
