TO THE HOUSE
In Concord's 28-21 setback against West Virginia State at home last week, sophomore quarterback Tyler Mizzell and junior wide receiver Damani Burrell were part of Concord and Division II history. Mizzell's 95-yard touchdown pass to Burrell in the first quarter was the longest play in CU football history, surpassing an 89-yard pass from Jack Mangel to Tywan Pearce at Fairmont State in 2021. The pitch and catch was also the longest play from scrimmage in Division II this season. And it was tied for the third longest play in the history of the MEC. Burrell entered Saturday with only two catches for 63 yards on the season, but aided by his 95-yard score, the Oakland, California native finished the day with his first career 100-yard game, notching three catches for 123 yards and his second touchdown of 2025.

TAKE YOUR CHANCE
CU's opponents are quickly finding out not to throw in the direction of senior defensive back Corey Radcliff after the Miami, Florida native came up with his MEC-best fifth interception in Saturday's game versus West Virginia State. Radcliff now has an interception in four straight game which is the longest streak for a Mountain Lion since 2012. Radcliff's five interceptions are tied for second in Division II. Helped by Concord's strong safety, the Maroon and Gray is tied for first in the conference in interceptions (nine) and has registered 28 pass break-ups on the season. Radcliff (nine), junior defensive back Nehemiah Scott (eight) and sophomore defensive back Stanley Horn Jr. (seven) are all top 30 in Division II in passes defended (interception + PBUs) this season. And since allowing 20 completions at UVa.-Wise to start the year, the Mountain Lions are only allowing an average of 11.4 completions per game since.

MIZZELL FOR MORE
After a tough day at Frostburg State that saw Mizzell only throw for 86 yards, the Denver, North Carolina native bounced back in a big way as he threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns against West Virginia State. With five 300-yard passing games in the first six contests this season, Mizzell is only 144 yards from reaching 2,000 passing yards for the season. If Mizzell were to get to 2,000 passing yards Saturday against Glenville State, he would be the first quarterback at Concord to reach 2,000 yards in seven games or less since Brian Novak had 2,013 yards after the seventh game of the season in 2014. Mizzell is coming off a game where he only had 18 completions, but hit eight receivers versus WVSU. Mizzell has completed a pass to six different receivers in every game this year, including a season-high nine at Charleston.

SPECIALIZING SPECIALISTS
The Mountain Lions received a lift from the special teams against West Virginia State. Though only punting twice last week, redshirt freshman punter Zach Moyer averaged 45 yards per punt—his best single game average this season. Freshman running back Curtis Clark boosted the return game with CU's longest punt return of the season, a 28-yard run back in the fourth quarter. It was also Concord's longest punt return in more than a year after the Maroon and Gray also had a 28-yard punt return at Frostburg State September 21 of last season. Clark has all four of CU's punt returns this year, and as a team the Mountain Lions are leading the conference with a 14.0 average.

AIR IT OUT
The top two passers in the MEC meet Saturday as Mizzell leads the conference in passing yards (1,856) and is seventh in Division II. Glenville State signal caller Anthony Garrett is top 20 in Division II in passing yards (1,575). Mizzell has thrown 16 touchdowns to Garrett's 10, but the four-year starter at quarterback for the Pioneers has been prone to the interception with nine picks this year. In his career, Garrett has started 33 games under center for Glenville State. The 3,431 yards Mizzell and Garrett have combined this season are the second-highest total of quarterback meeting this week in Division II. Missouri S&T's Jake Farrell (1,907) and McKendree's Ty Michael (1,696) have combined for 3,603 yards as that particular duo squares off Saturday in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

RED ALERT
Though Glenville State is only averaging 26.2 points per game which ranks sixth in the MEC, the Pioneers have been the conference's best red zone team at the halfway point of the season. In 26 trips to the red zone, GSU has scored 22 times and leads the conference with 15 touchdowns scored inside the 20-yard line. The Mountain Lions are in the middle of the pack in the MEC in red zone defense at 78.6 percent. On the flip side, Concord will try to solve Glenville State's stingy red zone defense that has only allowed opponents to score at a 61.1 percent rate this season, best in the conference and top 15 in Division II. In last week's double overtime win to knock off previously undefeated Frostburg State, GSU held the Bobcats to 3-for-6 in the red zone with two scores being field goals.

CLOSE CALLS
Four of the last six meetings between Concord and Glenville State have been one-possession games, including an overtime game at Glenville State in 2019—a 27-20 GSU win. In last year's 24-21 loss by the Mountain Lions, CU held a 21-10 lead early in the third quarter. Concord chunked off a season-best 253 rushing yards last year versus the Pioneers. Defensively, graduate defensive lineman Jaylen Dollar had a career-best eight tackles which was matched versus West Virginia State last week. Last year's game in Athens featured  eight turnovers with each defense coming up with four takeaways. Sophomore linebacker Xavier Ellison forced a fumble while Scott came up with one of two fumble recoveries for the Maroon and Gray.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
7- When reaching 2,000 yards this season, Mizzell would be the seventh quarterback in program history to throw for the bench mark.

9- Interceptions by CU through six games has already surpassed last year's total of eight for the entire 2024 season.

220- Though GSU's passing defense is giving up less than 200 yards passing (199.7) this season, the Pioneers are allowing 220 yards on the ground per game.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Glenville State overcame three turnovers—while not forcing any—and 13 penalties in the upset win at Frostburg State. Running back Jeremiah King who is the reigning MEC Offensive Player of the Week has rushed for 215 yards the last two weeks on 42 carries. Dating back to last year, GSU has won seven of its last eight games in the MEC with the only loss coming earlier this season to Charleston. The Pioneers are being forced to play their home games away from Glenville, West Virginia in 2025 with a $25 million renovation currently ongoing at Morris Stadium. Brandon Penn leads the MEC in tackles (62).
