Concord Clipped by Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University women's soccer team narrowly fell to Fairmont State 3-2 in a Mountain East Conference contest at Callaghan Stadium Wednesday night.

The match opened with a bang as the Falcons found the first goal of the match in just the fourth minute.

After a flurry of chances went both ways, Fairmont State (6-0-1, 4-0-1 MEC) doubled their lead with a 26th minute goal.

Concord (3-3-2, 3-1-2 MEC) wasted no time drawing one back as senior forward Caitlin Webster whipped in a beautiful cross that sophomore midfielder Tiana Campbell volleyed into the bottom right corner in the 30th minute.

The Mountain Lions kept attacking and pressing for an equalizer, but entered halftime still trailing 2-1.

At the break, both teams had five shots and CU led with three of them on goal to Fairmont's two.

The second half opened at breakneck pace once again, but slowed down after the first five.

Both teams were searching for the next goal, but it wouldn't come until the 84th minute when the Falcons curled in a free kick from range to make it 3-1.

Scrambling to get back within one goal, Concord scored in the 85th as sophomore defender Ella Rowell sent a ball into the box that Campbell headed over the keeper for her second goal of the game.

The only shot from CU in the final five minutes was a strike from distance by freshman midfielder Molly Watters with less than a minute in the contest.

Campbell led the way with six shots, three of which were on goal. She recorded her second brace of the season and sixth of her career. Rowell netted her third career assist while Webster had her second assist of the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough made four saves in the contest.

Concord travels to Bridgeport, W.Va. to face Salem at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
