GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team lost 76-72 to Glenville State in a Mountain East Conference matchup at the Waco Center Saturday afternoon.
After falling into a 43-39 hole at halftime, the Mountain Lions (8-10, 5-6 MEC) fought back to retake the advantage in the third quarter.
Senior guard
Skylar Davidson and sophomore guard
Alexis Frazee traded baskets to tie the game, 45-45, with just under six minutes on the clock in the third. Then, with 3:50 remaining, junior forward
Abbie Smith found the net to give CU its first lead of the game, 49-47.
Concord maintained the two-point advantage until a three-pointer from Frazee saw the Maroon and Gray hold a 54-49 edge with 1:45 left in the period. However, the Mountain Lions trailed by one, 56-55, after 30 minutes.
Junior guard
Kennedy Scales answered quickly to begin the fourth period, connecting on a jumper to take a one-point lead. The Pioneers regained control midway through the frame, A pair of Frazee baskets knotted the score at 64-64 with 4:41 remaining. After forcing a stop of defense, Smith drew contact and made a pair of free throws to lead 66-64 at the 3:55 mark.
CU tied the game on two free throws from senior guard Saniya Morris, but Glenville State controlled the game down the stretch, including taking a four-point lead with 13 seconds remaining.
Smith scored six points in the first quarter, but turnovers limited the Concord attack as it trailed 21-16 at the end of 10 minutes.
The game featured eight ties and six lead changes, all in the second half.
Frazee set a new career-high with 26 points off the bench and shooting 10-for-13 from the floor with four three-pointers. Smith (17) also scored in double figures and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Davidson put together a complete stat line with eight points, nine assists, and seven boards.
Morris was able to affect the game in a multitude of ways as well with nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals.
CU stays on the road to face Fairmont State Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
