LINEBACKING CORE
Concord's three starting linebackers—sophomore
Ryker Brown, sophomore
Nehemiah Scott and graduate student Jamari Scott—combined for 33 tackles versus UVa.-Wise Saturday afternoon. All three players recorded double-digit tackles with Brown (12) and Scott (11) establishing career highs in tackles. Scott ranks is third in the MEC in tackles (20) while Brown's 19 tackles are tied for fourth in the conference. Saturday marked the second straight season that CU had three or more players finish with 10 or more tackles in the same game. Sophomore linebacker
Brodee Rice (11) and Smith (18) were part of a trio that finished with double-digit tackles against West Liberty last season with both players establishing career highs in that game. Smith is eight tackles shy of 200 for his career, counting his time spent at Erskine as well.
LIFE IN THE BACKFIELD
The Mountain Lions recorded seven tackles for loss versus UVa.-Wise after notching nine tackles for loss in the season opener against Bluefield State. After 2.5 tackles for loss in his college debut, freshman defensive lineman
Jacorey Jackson added another 2.0 TFLs against the Cavaliers. The Atlanta, Georgia native is in a four-way tie for first in the MEC in tackles for loss after two games played. Jackson is also tied for 12
th in Division II in TFLs. The 16 TFLs in the first two games of the season are the most in a two-game stretch for the Concord defense since the final two games of 2022 when the Mountain Lions racked up 23 tackles for loss against Alderson Broaddus and UNC Pembroke. Graduate defensive lineman
Vonte Pannell added his fourth career sack in the UVa.-Wise contest.
BALL IS LOOSE
For the second straight week, the Maroon and Gray defense tallied a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Pannell's first-half sack resulted in a fumble recovery for Smith—the first of his career to go with his three career forced fumbles. Smith forced his third career fumble in the season opener versus Bluefield State. The Florence, South Carolina native is one of two players in the MEC with both a fumble forced and a fumble recovery early in the season, along with Wheeling's Nickale Martin. Concord has forced a fumble in two straight games versus Frostburg State with graduate defensive lineman
Delando Morris coming up with a forced fumble in last year's home contest versus the Bobcats.
NEWCOMERS
In each of the first two games, CU has had a different receiver lead the way in receptions—with both being new to the program this year. Against Bluefield State, junior wide receiver
Jakari Clark reeled in six catches for 75 yards. While Clark paced Concord against UVa.-Wised in yards, tallying 72, freshman wide receiver
Marcus Striggles collected five receptions in his first significant playing time against the Cavaliers. Before Striggles on Saturday, the last time a CU true freshman receiver led the team in receptions was Caeleb Bass in the final game of the 2019 season versus Wheeling. Clark ranks seventh in the MEC in receiving yards through two games with 147.
OUR STRENGTH VERSUS THEIR STRENGTH
Through two games the Concord run defense has proven its worth, allowing just 117.5 per game, good enough for second in the MEC. And CU is allowing the least amount of yards per carry in the conference at 3.0. Meanwhile, Frostburg State has traditionally been known as a power running team as the Bobcats rank in a tie for first in the league with 185.0 per game on the ground. FSU leads the MEC in yards per carry at 5.4. The Mountain Lions have been especially tough on the opposition's ground attack in the first half, giving up just 86 yards in the first 30 minutes of each of their first two games combined. Frostburg State has rushed for at least 125 yards in 18 consecutive games, compiling a record of 14-4 over that time.
HIDDEN YARDS
In what could turn into a field-position game, Concord and Frostburg State possess two of the best punting units in the MEC. Graduate kicker/punter
Josh Hutley is top five in Division II in net punting (45.9). And only three of Hutley's 10 punts have been returned this season. Concord is second in the conference in net punting (39.4). Frostburg State is not far behind as the Bobcats sit fourth in the MEC in net punting (38.0). FSU punter Sam Dominguez is averaging 39.3 yards per boot. In the kickoff game, Frostburg State does have a returning threat in Jordan Marcucci who is averaging 29.3 yards per return in two games.
TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY
Concord and Frostburg State played a classic two years ago at Bobcat Stadium as CU got out of western Maryland with a 23-22 win after stopping a two-point conversation on the game's final play. Only two current Mountain Lions saw action in that game, Pannell and senior defensive lineman
Bryan Maddox who was then a tight end on offense. Dating back to when Frostburg State joined the MEC prior to the 2019 season, the Bobcats are 20-5 at home. In 2022, Concord was out rushed 149-136, but used a big day through the air (354 yards) to outgain the Bobcats, 490-310. FSU won 34-3 last year in Athens. Pannell led Concord's defense with nine tackles. Sophomore defensive back
Kendall Bournes and Rice pitched in eight tackles each.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
The normal run-heavy FSU offense is more balanced this year with Myles Fulton at the controls of the offense. The first-year starting quarterback is second in the MEC in passing yards (538) and is tied for first in touchdowns (six). Big-play threats Trashaun Timmons (26.9 yards per catch) and Amari N'namdi-Hall (20.2 yards per catch) are second and third in the MEC with 188 and 182 yards, respectively. Owen Doyle has rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Frostburg State's defense has four interceptions. FSU is only allowing 138.5 passing yards per game.
