Concord Wraps Up Road Stretch at Lees-McRae

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team concludes a nine-game road stretch to begin the 2024 season as it faces Lees-McRae in a non-conference match Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Banner Elk, N.C.

ALL-TOURNAMENT PERFORMANCE
Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Thompson was named to the Mount Olive Invite All-Tournament Team for her performance over the weekend. The Cool Ridge, W.Va. native got the tournament underway with a 13-kill, three-dig game against Shaw. Then, she posted six kills in games against both Lenoir-Rhyne and host Mount Olive. To cap off the two-day performance, she notched a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs against Edinboro. For the tournament, Thompson tallied 37 kills, 38 digs, and two blocks. She ranks second on the team in both kills per set (2.64) and digs per set (2.46).
 
ACE IN THE HOLE
Through its first four games this season at the Colorado Mines Volleyball Classic, CU only served nine service aces. Across the four games played at the Mount Olive Invite, the Mountain Lions totaled 20 service aces including a season-high seven against Mount Olive. Sophomore setter Declyn Tooze and senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant tied for the lead on the weekend with five aces each. Tooze tied her career-high of four in a single game against Mount Olive. Pilant served two service aces in back-to-back efforts against Mount Olive and Edinboro. Freshman setter Rylee Wise picked up three aces during the tournament and leads the Mountain Lions averaging 0.44 service aces per set this season.
 
RUN IT BACK
Concord and Lees-McRae faced off last fall in the season-opening Cavalier Classic that saw CU come away with the win in five sets. The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-1 set advantage before the Mountain Lions won back-to-back frames to secure the victory. Sophomore outside hitter Meg Williams led Concord with 17 kills in the match followed by sophomore right side Natalie Brown who posted 12 and a career-high five blocks. Sophomore defensive specialist Allie Davis added 27 digs in just her second collegiate game played. Three other Mountain Lions logged double-digit digs to tally 94 digs in the game, the most since 2019.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Lees-McRae presents one of the most challenging defenses in the country, only allowing opponents to hit .079 against them (seventh in the country). The Bobcats also rank in the top 50 nationally in blocks per set led by fifth year middle hitter Destiny Holley's 1.36 blocks per set. Against CU last season, Holley led Lees-McRae with 19 kills and seven total blocks. Offensively, junior outside hitter Sydney Stigler leads LMC hitting for 2.65 kills per set and posting 18 kills against Concord in 2023.
