A NIGHT FOR THE AGES
Concord picked up its first MEC Tournament Thursday since the 2013 MEC First Round when the Mountain Lions defeated Glenville State when CU was the seven seed and GSU was seeded tenth. Sophomore outside hitter Meg Williams led the way for the Maroon and Gray against West Liberty as she notched her 15th double-double of the season with 24 kills, one shy of her career high—Williams tied the single-match program record for kills last year versus King. The Shady Spring, West Virginia native added 19 digs. After missing the final three matches of the regular season, sophomore outside hitter Chloe Thompson returned to the lineup with 15 kills and 11 digs. Over her last two matches, Thompson is averaging 3.7 kills per set. And sophomore defensive specialist Allie Davis became the first Concord player with a 30-dig match in three years. The win allowed CU to play in its first conference semifinal since 1992 when the Maroon and Gray was part of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).

TURNED AWAY
Along with the outside play of Thompson and Williams and the back row defense from Davis, the Mountain Lions tied their season high in blocks with 14 Thursday night. Graduate middle hitter Kyndra Pilant just missed tying her career high in blocks as she piled up eight blocks (three solo) versus West Liberty. Sophomore middle hitter Jasmine Anderson missed her single-game career high by one as well, amassing six blocks, and sophomore middle hitter Meagan Poticher came off the bench with five blocks after only totaling seven previous blocks this season. CU is tied for fourth in the MEC in blocks per set (2.18) while Friday's opponent, West Virginia State, leads the conference in blocks (2.33).

DON'T GET STUNG
Concord goes for its win over West Virginia State since CU picked off the Yellow Jackets in a four-set home win in 2017—a span of 14 matches. Thompson led the Mountain Lions in kills in both regular-season meetings this season as she rolled up nine kills at WVSU in early October and came back with seven kills at home less than a month ago. Because of the blocking prowess of West Virginia State, Concord has been held to a less than .100 percentage in both meetings in 2024. Davis has 33 digs in six sets of action against the tournament-favorite Yellow Jackets this year.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
West Virginia State took care of Frostburg State in the opening round of the MEC Tournament early Thursday evening with a sweep, but all three sets were decided by four points or less. WVSU setter Kiersten Eggleton is this year's MEC Player of the Year as she ranks second in the MEC in assists per game (9.62). Hannah Steele (3.32) and Maureen Matthews (3.25) are fourth and sixth in the MEC in kills per set.
