BEHIND THE CHAINS
The Mountain Lions' defense racked up eight tackles for loss Saturday at West Virginia State which was the second-most TFLs in a game this season behind the nine that CU collected in the season opener versus Bluefield State. Graduate defensive lineman
Delando Morris led the way with three tackles for loss. The Martinsville, Virginia native became the first Concord player with three tackles for loss in a single game since
Mekhi Williams tallied 3.5 tackles for loss at UNC Pembroke last season. With Saturday's performance, Morris moved up to sixth in the MEC in tackles for loss with seven on the season. Graduate linebacker
Jamari Smith threw in his first sack of the year at West Virginia State while graduate defensive lineman
Jaylen Dollar did the same.
TWO-WAY BACK
In his first collegiate start, freshman running back
Jaden Judge impressed by rushing for 53 yards on the ground while scoring his first collegiate touchdown in the third quarter. Judge added a team-high five receptions for 51 yards in the game at West Virginia State. Judge became the first CU running back with 50 or more receiving and rushing yards in the same game since
Kris Copeland at Fairmont State in November 2018. Judge has been a jolt for the Concord offense in his three games this year, averaging 5.6 yards per carry on 23 rush attempts. The Bradenton, Florida native also broke off Concord's longest running play of the year with a 30-yard rush at West Virginia State.
SPECIAL THREAT
For the second time this season, freshman wide receiver
Jeremiah Valdry amassed more than 100 return yards in a game. Valdry returned six kickoffs for an average of 25.3 yards at WVSU. The Marietta, Georgia native had a 59-yard return at West Virginia State which is his second longest return of the season behind the 92-yard touchdown at Frostburg State in week three. Valdry is 48
th in Division II in kick return average at 24.6 yards which also ranks third in the MEC among returners that have at least 10 kickoff returns. Furthermore, Valdry is approaching the top 10 in program history for single-season kickoff return yards, having already amassed 491 this fall. The tenth-most kickoff return yards at CU is 537 by Tywan Pearce in 2017.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN
Graduate quarterback
Blayne Ferguson played his best game of the season in a relief role at West Virginia State. After junior quarterback
Kameron Howard started for Concord at WVSU, Ferguson came in during the second half as he threw for 161 yards and a touchdown. The trio of Ferguson, Howard and freshman quarterback
Tristan Gabrels have combined to throw for 537 yards on 31-for-63 passing and four touchdowns to one interception in a non-starting role this fall. Ferguson is up to 713 passing yards for the season which ranks seventh in the MEC. Last year at Glenville State, Ferguson completed all three passes he attempted coming off the bench.
RALLY TO THE BALL
In last year's game versus the Pioneers, Smith and sophomore defensive back
Kendall Bournes tied for the team lead with nine tackles each. Each player also tallied a half tackle for loss. Over his last four games, Bournes has recorded 31 tackles to vault up to a tie for fifth in the MEC in tackles with 40 for the season. Smith is coming off a season-best seven solo tackles at West Virginia State, and his seven total tackles versus the Yellow Jackets were the second most this fall behind the 10 tackles that he piled up against UVa.-Wise. Smith is 12
th in the conference in tackles (35). Concord has four players in the top 12 of the MEC in tackles. Sophomore linebacker
Ryker Brown leads the league with 49 tackles while fellow sophomore linebacker
Nehemiah Scott is ninth (37).
NO FLY ZONE
Two of the top pass defenses in the MEC meet at Callaghan Stadium Saturday afternoon. Glenville State ranks first in the MEC, only allowing 167.5 yards per game. CU isn't far behind as it is only allowing 191.3 passing yards per game, fourth in the conference. Glenville State's seven interceptions are tied for third among MEC teams. Meanwhile, Concord has only allowed nine passing touchdowns through six games which is second fewest in the conference. The Mountain Lions tied their season high of three pass break-ups at WVSU. Sophomore defensive back
Elijah Copes became the first CU player with two more pass break-ups in a game this year while Scott had his fourth pass break-up of the season, tied for third in the conference.
THIRD PHASE
Along with the return ability of Valdry, Concord possesses one of the best punting games in the conference to make up one of the best special team units in the MEC. Graduate punter
Josh Hutley is 30
th in Division II averaging 41.4 yards per punt this season. The Geelong, Australia native has been better with his leg at Callaghan Stadium, averaging 44.3 yards per punt, compared to 39.1 yards on the road. GSU's Zander Watson is fifth in the conference in punting average with 39.7 yards per punt.
