Complete 2023 Schedule
ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team and head coach
Kate Dillon unveiled the program's schedule for the 2023 season Monday morning.
Concord is scheduled for 30 matches in the fall with 14 out-of-conference and 16 within the Mountain East Conference. Of the 16 league tilts, six will come against the MEC North—Alderson Broaddus, Fairmont State, Frostburg State, Notre Dame, West Liberty and Wheeling. Ten will be played double-round robin versus the MEC South—Charleston, Davis & Elkins, Glenville State, West Virginia State and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Mountain Lions open the season on the last day of August with four games over two days at UVa.-Wise, beginning with the host as well as Lees-McRae August 31. Day two features CU playing Johnson C. Smith and Kentucky State September 1.
Concord's home opener is September 5 versus Emory & Henry at the Carter Center.
September 8-9 sees the Maroon and Gray travel for four matches at West Georgia as they play Georgia College, West Georgia, St. Augustine's and Clark Atlanta.
The only match of the season with Mercer County rival Bluefield State is September 16 at BSU.
CU's MEC slate starts less than a week later, September 22, as it welcomes Frostburg State to the Carter Center. That is followed up by a home contest with West Virginia State September 26. The first road conference match is at Charleston September 28.
Three of the first five matches of October are on the road, including back-to-back dates with Alderson Broaddus and Notre Dame October 13-14. But, Concord returns to the Carter Center for the start of three of the next four matches at home October 20-21 versus Wheeling and West Liberty. The final non-conference match of the season is October 25 versus King—the return of a home-and-home after CU travels to King September 12.
The Mountain Lions have back-to-back road matches at Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan, October 27 and 31, before hosting Charleston and Davis & Elkins November 3 and 7. The season closes at Glenville State November 10.
SCHEDULE NOTES
-In the only meeting of last season, Concord swept UVa.-Wise, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20, September 2 at home.
-Concord has won both all-time meetings versus Emory & Henry, a four-set victory in September 2021, and the only previous home match, a sweep in September 2012.
-Dating back to the 1995 season, the Mountain Lions have never played a match in the state of Georgia. Of the four teams that CU will match up against in September, it has only played West Georgia—last year at the Carter Center.
-Last year's contest at Bluefield State turned into a five-set marathon with BSU taking the fifth set, 15-13. The fourth set was the only game decided by more than five points. Since 2007, CU leads the all-time series 24-8.
