ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team went 1-1 versus Glenville State Wednesday evening at the CU Softball Field in two Mountain East Conference games, winning 1-0 before losing 8-3.
Game 1: Concord 1 – Glenville State 0 (Nine Innings)
The Mountain Lions got their second walk-off victory of the season, and first since February 8, with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
The ninth-inning rally started with a leadoff single from freshman infielder
Lacie Lewis. Graduate infielder
Sarah Thompson followed with a double to right center field that moved junior outfielder and pinch runner
Imani Campbell to third base.
During the next at-bat, sophomore outfielder/pitcher
Rachael Koller hit a ground ball to second base, and the throw home was late as Campbell got in for the game's only run.
Offense was limited in game one as CU (15-26, 6-14 MEC) didn't pick up its first hit until a single by sophomore utility
Kylee Stacy in the sixth. The Mountain Lions pushed two runners into scoring position in the sixth, but was unable to score.
Junior pitcher
Nancy-Jo Roberts worked around two Glenville State (19-17, 12-8 MEC) baserunners in the eighth. GSU also pushed the go-ahead run to third base with two outs in the ninth, but was unable to plate the runner.
Roberts (9-12) had her longest outing in the Maroon and Gray as she tossed all nine innings while scattering seven hits, all singles, and collecting five strikeouts. Roberts recorded her fourth shutout of the season which is tied for third-most in program history, as she matched zeros with GSU's Holly Brehm.
Sophomore infielder
Courtney Raines and Thompson both reached base twice with a hit and walk each.
Game 2: Glenville State 8 – Concord 3
Glenville State scored the game's first four runs as Concord was forced to chase the lead.
GSU struck for a two-run home run in the first inning, and added two more with a run-scoring single in the top of the second. CU came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Raines led off with a double to center field before freshman catcher
Morgan Gleason homered two batters later in what was her first career long ball, cutting the deficit in half.
The Pioneers scored a run in the third and added two more in the fifth to widen the lead to 7-2.
Sophomore outfielder
Kayla McCraw led off the fifth with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a groundout, but 7-3 was as close as the Mountain Lions would get.
Gleason tallied two RBI on the two-run home run. McCraw finished 2-for-2 after entering the game in the top of the fourth.
Koller (3-5) was the pitcher of record as she gave up two earned runs to start the game, pitching 1.2 innings. Sophomore pitcher
Caitlyn Bauer struck out four over 5.1 innings in relief.
Concord travels to Frostburg State 2:00 p.m. Saturday for a doubleheader.
