Concord Splits Pair of Matches Against Glenville State, Bluefield State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team swept Glenville State 3-0 and lost to Bluefield State 3-1 in the Concord Triangular Tuesday in the Carter Center.

Set 1
Concord began the opening frame with a 12-0 run on five service aces from freshman setter Paige Richmond. Richmond's five aces in the run tied her career-high. Freshman outside hitter Meg Williams added two kills to extend the CU lead to 16-3. A kill from freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 advantage, 25-16.
 
Set 2
Senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant and senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow picked up kills to jump ahead on the Pioneers in the second set, 4-1. CU went on another massive 8-0 scoring rally to take back the lead, 16-9. During the run, Richmond collected three more aces tying her with Hannah Steele and Imani Rodgers for the most aces in the single game with eight. Williams and Thompson shared four kills each in the game as Concord won the second set, 25-20.
 
Set 3
CU answered a 4-0 GSU run with a 4-0 run of its own behind kills from Thompson, Williams, and Pilant. A kill from freshman outside hitter Meagan Poticher and an ace from Williams tied the game 9-9. The Mountain Lions would go on another scoring run, rattling off five straight points, including a kill from freshman setter Declyn Tooze and an ace from freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis to regain the lead 20-19. Three kills from Thompson in the closing moments of the set sealed the match for Concord, 25-22.
 
Match Stats
Thompson led all players with 16 kills in the match paired with six digs. Williams added 11 kills, one ace, one block, and seven digs. Pilant racked up eight kills and four blocks. Richmond finished with 18 assists and eight aces, while Tooze contributed 13 assists. Davis had 16 digs along with five assists in the match. As a team, Concord hit .327 in the game and totaled 10 blocks.

Set 1
The Mountain Lions opened the second game with a 5-0 run that included three kills from Williams. Thompson and Pilant smashed a pair of kills to extend the CU 15-9. Kills from senior right side Reese Turner and freshman right side Natalie Brown gave Concord a five-point edge, 20-15. A 4-0 run sparked by kills from Thompson, Pilant, and Turner saw CU take the first set 25-17.  
 
Set 2
Two kills each from Thompson and Williams saw the Mountain Lions take a one-point lead early in the set, 9-8. Back-to-back kills from Thompson and Williams stopped a 5-0 Bluefield State to cut CU's deficit to four, 12-8. BSU would end the frame on a 7-2 run to knot the game 1-1.
 
Set 3
Thompson clubbed four kills in the early goings of the third set during a 6-0 run to give CU the lead 11-9. Subsequent kills from Williams tied the match 14-14. Bluefield State's runs of 5-0 and 4-0 late in the set saw the Big Blues take a 2-1 lead in the match, 25-17.
 
Set 4
Three Big Blues attack errors and kills from Richmond and Williams shot Concord into the lead 8-3 early in the fourth frame. A kill from Brown and an ace from Richmond extended the Mountain Lion lead 19-9. A quick Bluefield State run was quickly halted as Williams and Brown connected for two more kills, making the score 23-14. The game finished on a 12-1 scoring run by BSU as they would take the match 3-1 by a final score of 26-24.
 
Match Stats
Williams and Thompson both recorded double-doubles as Williams went for 20 kills and 13 digs, while Thompson smashed 17 kills and 13 digs. Richmond notched her third career double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs. Davis finished with 15 digs and five assists in the match. As a team, CU blocked eight attacks from Bluefield State. Leading the front row was Pilant, as she had six total blocks. She was preceded by Turner with four blocks, Williams with three blocks, Whitelow with two blocks, and freshman middle hitter Jasmine Anderson logged one block.
 
The Mountain Lions hit the road to face Salem inside T. Edward Davis Gymnasium on Friday and head to South Euclid, Ohio to face MEC Conference foe Notre Dame on Saturday.
