TO THE HOUSE
The Mountain Lions play their first game with a record of 1-0 after a 27-20 win against Emory & Henry Saturday on the road. Senior running back
Kris Copeland made a big difference in the victory as he amassed 221 all-purpose yards in the contest with 165 of those yards coming on kickoffs. Copeland raced 94 yards on a second-quarter kickoff for a touchdown. It was the first kick return for a touchdown for CU since the 2014 contest at Shepherd when Tiko Henderson took a kickoff 92 yards for a score. Copeland's touchdown was the fourth-longest kickoff return in Division II in the opening week of games. And his 165 kickoff return yards were second in Week 1 behind only Shippensburg's Redd Douglas' 166 at West Virginia State.
BLUE COLLAR WORK
Concord's defense stepped up to limit Emory & Henry to 262 yards of total offense—the Wasps piled up 438 yards of offense per game last season. The 262 yards were the third-fewest allowed by an MEC team last week. The effort came without the Maroon and Gray forcing a turnover in the contest—just the second time in the last 25 games Concord failed to record a takeaway. Saturday was the third time in the last six games, dating back to last season, that CU has limited an opponent to less than 300 yards. Graduate linebacker
Ty Maust led the way for the Mountain Lions with 10 tackles at E&H.
STOP SIGN
The Concord defensive front spent part of the afternoon in the Emory & Henry backfield as it recorded nine tackles for loss. The nine tackles for loss represent the most for a CU defense since the next-to-last game of the 2019 season at Charleston. Fifth-year senior defensive lineman
Dajor Davenport tallied a career-best three tackles for loss that also included his first sack of the season. Two of the seven tackles for graduate linebacker
Tylen Fowler went for loss against the Wasps. Graduate defensive backs
Rashon Lusane and
Davon Williams came from the secondary to post a tackle for loss each.
RETURN TO FORM
Because of the shortened spring 2021 season and a season-ending injury last fall, junior wide receiver
Jarod Bowie has been limited to just six games at Concord. But on Saturday in his first game since October 2 of last season, Bowie made a big impact as he hauled in six catches for 96 yards and his fourth career touchdown. Sixty of the yards for Bowie came on the final possession of the first half where he caught a go-ahead score that gave CU a 20-14 lead at halftime. Bowie's 96 yards were the third-most in the MEC in the opening week of the season.
NUMBER GETTING CALLED
After the Mountain Lions lost its two listed free safeties on the depth chart to injuries in the first half of Saturday's win, Williams was a mainstay in the CU secondary for the remainder of the game. The Baltimore, Maryland native tallied a career-high seven tackles as he finished in a tie for second on the team in tackles. His second-half tackle for loss was the first of his career. Williams is expected to get the call at the Hawk position Saturday which will be his first start since the end of the 2018 season at Fairmont State when he recorded his only career interception.
DUALING GUNSLINGERS
Saturday will be a matchup of two of the best quarterbacks that the MEC has to offer early in the season. Concord senior quarterback
Jack Mangel threw his 24
th and 25
th career touchdown passes on Saturday, becoming the eighth player in program history to toss 25 touchdowns. Mangel finished the day with 208 yards and two scores. Glenville State signal caller and former Towson quarterback Jeff Miller made his GSU debut by throwing for 341 yards and four touchdowns on just 14 completions in a 44-15 win at Quincy. Miller was high school teammates with CU junior wide receiver
Cayden Chambers at Murietta Mesa in California. Chambers was on the receiving end of Mangel's first touchdown Saturday in his CU debut, a 40-yard strike on the game's third play—the seventh different receiver to catch a touchdown from Mangel.
DOWN TO THE WIRE
The Mountain Lions will be seeking their first win over Glenville State since a 54-27 win at home to open the 2014 season. Though CU has yet to break through versus GSU in seven years, the Maroon and Gray has had some close calls with four of the last six games versus the Pioneers being decided by seven points or less. Last season, Mangel set single-game program marks in completions (36) and attempts (51), but Glenville State came up with a 17-10 win. Bowie had a career game with 15 receptions and 204 yards. In 2019, the Pioneers outlasted Concord in overtime, 27-20. The last time the two programs played at Callaghan Stadium was a 41-35 GSU win after Concord went to the fourth quarter trailing 41-15, and had a last minute drive stall out inside the Glenville State 30-yard line.
SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Despite winning by nearly 30 points, Glenville State gave up 257 yards on the ground at Quincy. Meanwhile, Concord was only able to rush for 65 yards in its win at Emory & Henry. Junior running back
Thurlow Wilkins had a team-best 11 carries for 48 yards against E&H. Last season at GSU, the Mountain Lions were able to total 50 rushing yards. And Glenville State ended up being the third-best rushing defense in the MEC as it only allowed 105 yards per game in 2021.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Eight different receivers caught a pass for Glenville State in the first game of the season as no one had more than three catches. Javian Bellamy hauled in three receptions for 119 yards and a score. Alfred Menjor (74 yards) and Zakee Swann (71 yards) helped the Pioneers rush for 156 yards at Quincy. Though GSU had trouble stopping the run, it held Quincy to 164 passing yards. Glenville State also forced four turnovers (two fumbles, two interceptions). Former Greenbrier East standout Marion Lawson recorded two sacks for the Pioneers.
