ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's and women's cross country teams start their seasons when they travel to the Virginia Tech Invite in Blacksburg, Virginia Friday.
The women's race begins at 6:00 p.m. with the men's race to follow at 6:30 p.m.

SEASON OUTLOOK
Concord's men's cross country team was voted second in the Mountain East Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, and pegged third in the Preseason USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Poll. CU is coming off a third-place showing at last year's Division II Atlantic Regional Championship, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championship. CU returns three all-region selections from last season, including Atlantic Region Runner of the Year, fifth-year senior
Issac Prather. Fellow fifth-year senior
Cedric Drennen and sophomore
Logan Zuchelli were all-region last year while juniors
Caleb Hatcher and
Preston Prather earned All-MEC accolades.
CU's women's squad collected its first all-region performers in program history as fifth-year senior
Hannah Altizer and senior
Emily Wallace earned the distinction a season ago. The pair was also All-MEC First Team while sophomore
Erin O'Sullivan was named to the All-MEC Second Team. Concord finished third at the MEC Championship in 2021 which is where the Mountain Lions were selected to finish in the conference preseason poll this fall.
PAST RESULTS AT VIRGINIA TECH
The men's team finished second out of four teams at last season's Virginia Tech meet. I. Prather was fourth as he clocked a time of 24:56. Friday's race will be 6,000-meters in distance compared to last year's 8,000-meter race. Zuchelli (16
th) and P. Prather (20
th) were top-20 finishers. Drennen was 32
nd and senior
Alex Watty rounded out CU's top five in 39
th. The Mountain Lions were third at the 2019 Hokie Invite as I. Prather and Drennen were in the top 30.
The Maroon and Gray women were sixth at VT last fall. Altizer came through in 29
th while O'Sullivan (43
rd) and sophomore
Madison Cornett (44
th) landed in the top 50. The top runner for Concord at the 2019 Virginia Tech meet was then-freshman
Gretchen Mills who placed 45
th on the 4,000-meter course. In fact, Mills is the only current Mountain Lion that raced in 2019.
