Concord Falters Against Notre Dame

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped both games of its Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at the CU Softball Field.

Game 1: Notre Dame 5 – Concord 2
Notre Dame (20-22, 13-13 MEC) got out to an early lead and held off Concord (17-31, 10-18 MEC) to take game one of the doubleheader.

After NDC scored two runs in the top of the first inning, senior pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson led off the bottom of the frame with a single. Thompson put herself into scoring position by swiping second base two batters later. Senior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson singled to right field to put runners at the corners with one out. Concord narrowed the deficit to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly into right field hit by junior catcher/outfielder Jolie Privett that scored L. Thompson.

Notre Dame scored a run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 5-1.

Freshman pitcher/infielder Rachael Koller and senior catcher/utility player Mikayah Pulliam started the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles. After sophomore outfielder Imani Campbell came in to pinch run for Koller, freshman pitcher/first baseman Caitlyn Bauer singled to right field to score Campbell from second.

Offensively, S. Thompson, Bauer, and freshman first baseman/outfielder Kassidy Garvey tallied two hits each. Privett and Bauer recorded one RBI each in the game.

Bauer (10-12) was the losing pitcher in a complete game outing, however she struck out a career-high 11 batters in the contest.

Game 2: Notre Dame 10 – Concord 1 (Six Innings)
Concord allowed eight NDC runs in the first five innings and was limited to just three hits in the game two loss.

CU's only run came across in bottom of the fifth inning. Garvey drove a ball into left field for a leadoff single, then was pinch ran for by freshman second baseman/outfielder Aubrey Matice. Koller roped a double into the gap in left center field to score Matice and get Concord on the board.

At the plate, Garvey accounted for two of Concord's hits in the game.

Koller (7-15) was hit with the loss on the mound, striking out one batter in three innings pitched.

Concord travels to Buckhannon, West Virginia to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in a MEC doubleheader Friday at 2:00 p.m.
