BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team was defeated by nationally-ranked No. 21 Notre Dame, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at the YMCA Cline Complex.
The Mountain Lions (4-11-2, 3-11-1 MEC) weathered an early surge from NDC (13-3-1-, 11-3-1 MEC). The Falcons scored in the sixth minute, but eight of the next nine shots were wiped away by the
Concord defense to finish the first half. And freshman goalkeeper
Tommy Smith made four first-half saves.
Notre Dame was able to double its lead in the 24
th minute.
CU had a chance to trim the deficit in half in the 57
th minute as a rocket shot from freshman forward
Louis Cole was punched away by Notre Dame goalkeeper Pedro Alves.
The Falcons added their third goal in the 70
th minute.
It appeared the Mountain Lions would get on the board with two minutes to go as a cross from junior midfielder
Robbie Stiles found the head of junior midfielder
Ricardo Chinea-Pegler inside the six-yard box. However, Chinea-Pegler's shot was just over the bar as he was seeking to score for the third straight game.
Freshman defender Garrett Boucher, Chinea-Pegler, Cole and senior midfielder
Michael Shelor accounted for the Concord shots.
Smith totaled seven saves.
Concord wraps up the regular season against another nationally-ranked foe, No. 8Â Charleston, 7:00 p.m. Saturday on the road.Â
