Guay Enjoys Success in First Season of Pro Baseball

ATHENS, W.Va. – All levels of Minor League Baseball have come to a conclusion for the summer, and with that the season has also come to a close for former Concord University baseball standout Will Guay.

Guay was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals organization in the 24th round of the Major League Baseball Draft in June and was assigned to the Cardinals' Appalachian League affiliate in Johnson City, Tennessee.

During his first year of professional ball, Guay pitched in 16 games with three starts as he tallied a total of 30.2 innings for the Cardinals of Johnson City. The 2018 All-Mountain East Conference First Team pitcher went 2-1 with an ERA of 2.35 and 42 strikeouts. Guay also converted all four save chances and tied for second in the Appalachian League in saves.

From July 17 through August 13, Guay did not allow an earned run which covered eight appearances and 13.2 innings. Over those 13.2 innings, Guay also picked up 19 strikeouts.

Guay's second win of the season came in the Appalachian League Championship game in which the West Palm Beach, Florida native tossed 3.1 innings and allowed the Cardinals to come back to the defeat Burlington (N.C.) Royals in the decisive game three of the Appy League Championship Series on September 4.
