The Mountain Lions fell 85-82 to Notre Dame Saturday afternoon at home as their record sits at 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the MEC. Fairmont State is part of a five-way, first-place tie with CU at 3-1 in the league while it sports a 5-4 overall record. Frostburg State is 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the MEC.
RECORD WATCH
After posting back-to-back 20-point performances against Urbana and Notre Dame last week, junior forward
Riley Fitzwater stands just 82 points away from 1,000 in her career. Fitzwater went for 21 points and 15 rebounds against Urbana before returning home to pour in 22 points and collect 10 rebounds. The two performances were Fitzwater's 34
th and 35
th career double-doubles. Fitzwater would join May as an active 1,000-point scorer as May has 1,312 career points. The last time CU had two active 1,000-point scorers on the same team was in 2011-12 with
Camisha Alexander and
Jolysa Brown. Fitzwater would become the 18
th member of the 1,000-point club at Concord. Also on Saturday, Fitzwater became just the fourth player in program history to amass 750 career rebounds as she is now tied with Beverly Cook for third all-time at CU with 750 boards.
TRIPLE THREAT
Ahead of play this week, May leads the MEC in scoring with 24.4 points per game while Fitzwater ranks seventh (18.4 points per game) and sophomore guard
Maggie Guynn is eighth (17.9 points per game). With the trio leading the way, Concord is the only team in the MEC with three players ranked in the top 10 in scoring in the conference. And only three teams—Fairmont State, Glenville State and Urbana—have two players in the top 15. On Saturday, Fitzwater, Guynn and May combined for 69 of Concord's 82 points as they shot 59.5 percent from the floor (25-for-42). And Saturday wasn't even the most explosive outburst of the season for the three top scorers. At West Virginia State, they combined for 87 points as May poured in a career-best 38.
PAINT PRESENCE
When Concord and Fairmont State get together, it will be a matchup of two of the best post players in the MEC in Concord's Fitzwater and Fairmont State's Rachel Laskody. In four career games versus the Fighting Falcons, Fitzwater is averaging 12.2 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game. In a starting role for the first time last season, Laskody averaged 13.5 points per game versus CU while shooting 52 percent (13-for-25). Last season, the Mountain Lions swept FSU for the first time since 2011-12. Part of the success came from junior forward
Tamra Scott providing a career-best 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench in an 87-69 home win. Scott added seven points and six rebounds at Fairmont State.
THREE-POINT THREAT
Fairmont State leads the MEC in three-pointers made this season with 93 while also shooting the best percentage (39.9 percent / 93-for-233) in the conference. CU has the MEC's best field goal defense, limiting opponents to just 38.0 percent. However, the Mountain Lions are just seventh when it comes to shutting down the three-point line as opponents are shooting 31.3 percent against Concord from behind the arc. Kamrin Weimer and Sierra Kotchman have combined to make 61 three-pointers this season, and both are shooting 42 percent or better from three-point distance. In a much more smaller sample size—13-for-30—Guynn is shooting 43.3 percent from beyond the arc. Concord's 33.1 team percent from three-point range is third in the MEC.
MARYLAND, MY MARYLAND
Saturday's contest with Frostburg State will be the first time that CU and the MEC newcomer meets in women's basketball. In fact, it will be the first the Mountain Lions play a team from Maryland since becoming a Division II school in 1994. The last time Concord faced a team for the first time in program history was a 69-56 loss to Shaw to start the 2014-15 season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
3- Consecutive games for Guynn with at least five assists.
50.1- Concord's season field-goal percentage which is tied for fifth in Division II.
76.9- Season-high in free-throw percentage (16-for-21) for CU against Notre Dame, led by Guynn's 8-for-8 performance.
