Concord Locks Down Urbana in 75-49 Win

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team stymied Urbana in the second half Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center to win a 75-49 Mountain East Conference game.

CU (12-14, 8-12 MEC) took control of the contest early in the second quarter as it opened up a 27-19 lead with 7:10 remaining in the second quarter after a 9-2 run. The Mountain Lions continued to keep their lead above five points for the remainder of the half and led 40-32 at halftime.

Sophomore forward Madison May (11 points) and junior guard Andreanna Pool (10 points) combined for 21 of the 40 first-half points.

Freshman forward Riley Fitzwater converted a layup 24 seconds in the second half to put CU up double digits on Urbana (11-13, 9-11 MEC) for the remainder of the game. The layup also kick started a run where the Mountain Lions outscored UU 24-7 in the third quarter, and held the Blue Knights to 17 total second-half points.

Concord stifled UU to just 20 percent (6-for-30) shooting in the second half from the field. While limiting Urbana to 3-for-15 in the third quarter, the Mountain Lions shot 62.5 percent (10-for-16) in the third period with Fitzwater going 5-for-6 from the floor and senior guard Danielle Catron adding a 3-for-4 effort including drilling both three-point attempts in the third.

Fitzwater finished with her 16th double-double of the season as she posted 22 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks. Catron added 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting and a 3-for-4 mark from three-point range.

May recorded 14 points and seven rebounds and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line in the contest. As a team, CU shot 18-for-21 from the charity stripe with Fitzwater also going 6-for-6.

Pool rounded out the Mountain Lions in double figures with 12 points while adding four assists.

Concord held Urbana 29.7 percent shooting—the first time CU has held an opponent under 30 percent since January 22, 2015 when it held Wise to 25 percent from the floor.

CU plays its final regular season road game 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against West Virginia State.
