Concord Plays Host to Notre Dame, Urbana

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University women's basketball team welcomes Notre Dame College to the Carter Center 5:30 p.m. Thursday before hosting Urbana 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

RECORDS & MEC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS
 If CU wins one of its games against the two schools from Ohio and West Virginia Wesleyan goes 0-2 in its games against Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty, the Mountain Lions can secure a spot in the MEC Tournament.

Concord is 11-13 overall this season and 7-11 in the MEC with a two-game lead over WVWC for the final MEC Tournament spot.

Notre Dame is 17-8 this season and is 13-5 in the conference.

Urbana is .500, both overall (11-11) and in the MEC (9-9).

SCORCHING THE NETS
Although CU lost 83-67 to Davis & Elkins Monday in a non-conference battle, the Mountain Lions shot a season-high 60.5 percent (26-for-43) from the field.

Additionally, Concord is the first team in the MEC to shoot 60 percent or better in a game this season.

Three different Mountain Lions shot 75 percent or better from the field in the road game against the Senators.

Freshman Riley Fitzwater paced the effort by going 6-for-7 (85.7 percent) from the floor.

Senior forward Heather Chapman was 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) shooting as she dropped in a season-best 21 points.

Junior guard Andreanna Pool was 6-for-8 (75 percent) in the contest.

HOT AFTER HALF
Over its four games, the halftime intermission has not affected Concord.

During the third quarter of games against Davis & Elkins, Fairmont State, Shepherd and West Liberty, the Maroon and Gray has shot at least 50 percent in the third quarter in each instance and 64.7 percent (33-for-51) overall.

At Davis & Elkins, CU was 8-for-8 in the third period.

In the last four games during the third quarter, Chapman is shooting 85.7 percent (6-for-7) from the field while Fitzwater has hit 80 percent of her shots (8-for-10) in the 10 minutes following halftime. 

DOUBLE CLINCH
By hauling in five rebounds at Davis & Elkins, Fitzwater went over 280 rebounds for the season meaning the Glenville, West Virginia native clinched averaging a double-double for the 28-game regular season.

Fitzwater has scored 311 points and grabbed 281 rebounds this season.

She is tied for first in rebounds per game (11.7) in the conference with Wheeling Jesuit's Chenelle Moore and continues to lead the MEC in blocks per game (3.8).

The last player to average a double-double for an entire season for the Mountain Lions was Jolysa Brown during the 2011-12 season when she scored 20 points per game and pulled down 12 rebounds per contest.

EFFICIENCY CLASH
Thursday's contest will be a matchup of the two best shooting teams in the MEC.

Concord is shooting the ball at 46.3 percent for the season which leads the league while Notre Dame has made 43.8 percent of its shots in 2017-18.

The Mountain Lions are tied for 14th nationally in field goal percentage and are third in the region behind Indiana (Pa.) and West Chester.

NDC's 43.8 percent from the field puts them in a tie for 40th nationally in shooting.

Individually, Fitzwater leads the MEC in field goal percentage (70.4 / 138-for-196) while sophomore forward Madison May is fourth (52.7 / 137-for-260).

Notre Dame's Kim Cook sits fifth in the MEC in shooting (52.0 / 132-for-254) and Seina Adachi is eighth (43.7 / 148-for-339).

BACKCOURT SCORING
In their careers, junior guard Emily Boothe and senior guard Danielle Catron have excelled against Urbana.

In her last five meetings with the Blue Knights, Catron is averaging 18.4 points including three 20-point performance.

Catron needs seven points to pass Melissa Grose on the all-time scoring list at CU for 13th place. The Marion, Virginia native currently has 1,116 points in her career.

Meanwhile, Boothe has gone for an average of 16.4 points per game in her five career contests with Urbana including a career-best 26 points on January 12, 2016.

Additionally, the Riner, Virginia native is shooting 57.6 percent from the floor (30-for-52) and 48.2 percent (14-for-19) from the three-point line against Urbana in her career.

CLOSE CALL
Concord is 0-10 all-time versus Notre Dame with nine of the meetings coming as MEC foes.

The teams also played a non-conference contest in Fairmont, West Virginia during the 2011-12 season.

Only three of the games between the teams have been decided by less than 10 points including the first meeting this season at NDC.

The Falcons took a 66-64 victory from CU as a late three-attempt by the Mountain Lions fell short.

In the defeat, Fitzwater had 16 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks. Pool netted a career-best 16 points.

Chapman added her own double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
8- Fitzwater needs eight blocks for 100 on the season, only four teams in the MEC haved 100 or more blocks.

12- Concord can match the past two years' win total combined with a win this weekend.

70- Fitzwater is shooting 70 percent from the field, the only player in Division II shooting at least 70 percent.

NOTRE DAME AT A GLANCE
Notre Dame arrives having won five of its last six games with its only loss coming to MEC leader Glenville State.

Adachi (15.9 points) and Cook (13.7 points) are joined in double figures by Marisa Finazzo (10.8 points per game).

The Falcons have nine playes averaging at least 16 minutes per game.

NDC leads the MEC in three-point shooting (36.5 percent) and is fourth in made triples (8.8 per game).

URBANA AT A GLANCE
Urbana has lost five of its last seven games, but does have wins over Notre Dame and Wesleyan during the stretch.

Stefanie Davis and Sylvia Hudson are both top 10 scorers in the league with Davis pouring in 17.2 points per game and Hudson adding 16.6 points per game.

The Blue Knights are the best free-throw -throw shooting team in the MEC at 77.3 percent.
