Concord Ends First Semester at West Virginia Wesleyan

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University women's basketball team plays its final game of the 2017 calendar year when it travels to West Virginia Wesleyan 2:00 p.m. Saturday for a Mountain East Conference game.

RECORDS
The Mountain Lions are 3-5 overall and sports a record of 1-4 against conference foes.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats are 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the MEC.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD
Although in a loss to Glenville State, CU scored over 80 points for the second consecutive game as it posted 82 points against GSC after scoring 87 in an overtime win versus West Virginia State.

It was the first time the Mountain Lions had scored 80 points in back-to-back games since January 19 and 21 of last season when it scored 91 points against UVa.-Wise and 95 at West Virginia State.

Additionally, the Maroon and Gray shot 48 percent from the floor in both games despite going a combined 7-for-26 from three-point range (26.9 percent).

In eight games this season, CU has topped 48 percent shooting from the field three times after only accomplishing the feat twice during the 2016-17 campaign.

MULTIPLE SCORERS
Concord had five players score in double figures versus Glenville State as sophomore forward Madison May equaled her career high with 21 points to pace the group.

Senior guard Danielle Catron scored 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting.

Junior guard Emily Boothe and senior forward Heather Chapman each had 12 points while freshman forward Riley Fitzwater recorded her fifth double-double of the season in just 20 minutes of action with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Furthermore, Boothe did a little bit of everything by adding seven rebonds, seven assists and four steals to go along with her 12 points.

It was the first time CU had five players score at least 10 points since last November, also against Glenville State at home.

LEADING THE PACK
Entering play this weekend, Concord is leading the MEC in field goal percentage at 44.3.

The Mountain Lions are the only team in the conference shooting it better than 43 percent per game. Shepherd is second at 42.9 percent.

Catron, Fitzwater and May lead Concord in shooting percentage.

Fitzwater has made 73.8 percent (45-for-61) of her shots while May is shooting 55.1 percent (49-for-89) and Catron is at 45.6 percent (36-for-79).

CU is the only team in MEC that have three players shooting at least 45 percent that have attempted a minimum of 50 shots.

Matter-of-factly, only three teams in the MEC have two players that are shooting 45 percent or better with 50 tries: Glenville State, Notre Dame and West Virginia Wesleyan.

RARE COMPANY
Saturday's game will represent the quarter mark of the MEC schedule with both teams playing their sixth conference in a 22-game league slate.

Only Fitzwater and Wheeling Jesuit's Chenelle Moore are averaging double-doubles for the season.

The Glenville, West Virginia native is notching 12.3 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.

The last Concord player to average a double-double for an entire season was 2017 Concord Hall of Fame inductee Jolysa Brown during the 2011-12 season.

PHOTO FINISH
Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan have played some tight games over the last four years.

Six of the eight meetings have been decided by eight points or less including a 61-58 win for CU last season at the Carter Center.

The two games that were wrapped up early were two Wesleyan wins at home the last two seasons.

The Mountain Lions and WVWC have split the four last meetings with the home team winning in each instance.

In the two CU wins, Catron has averaged 16.5 points per game with Boothe adding 14 points per contest.

In the two Wesleyan victories, the Bobcats have held Boothe to six points per game and Catron to eight.

BENCH POWER
Concord's bench has played a pivotal role in the last four games for CU as the reserves have averaged 21.2 points per game including two games of 26  points.

In last season's win, Catron scored 18 of the 26 bench points.

The Marion, Virginia native added nine points off the bench in last year's road contest inside the Rockefeller Center.

WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
WVWC is fifth in the MEC standings with its 3-2 mark against league foes.

The Bobcats are led by post player Mari Stewart who is scoring 11.7 points and pulling down 8.7 rebounds per game.

Wesleyan has won both of its home games this season with wins over Shepherd and Wheeling Jesuit.

Tyra Hughes is averaging 14.7 points per game while handing out 4.0 assists per contest.
