Concord Loses to Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was swept in three sets against Charleston Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center in Mountain East Conference play.

UC (16-13, 12-4 MEC) won the match 25-18, 27-25, 25-18 as the Mountain Lions dropped to 14-19 overall and 8-8 in the conference.

The two teams traded points to start the match, but Charleston went on a 7-2 run to open up an 18-13 lead on the Maroon and Gray. Charleston grew its lead by as much as seven as it went on to win the set 25-18.

Concord chased the lead in the second set until it was able to tie the game at 13-13. The score went back-and-forth until an attack error gave CU a 19-18 lead. The Golden Eagles came back with five straight points to take a 23-19 edge. But, Concord fought back to tie the set at 24-24. The run was spurred by a kill from senior middle hitter Shea Hoffman and a service ace from sophomore setter Jenna Mounts. Charleston would win three of the next four points to win the game, 27-25.

UC was able to go on a 7-1 run early in the third set and controlled the set from there to win by seven points again.

Junior middle hitter Brooke Heck tallied a team-high eight kills to go with four blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis added seven kills.

Senior setter Casey Mandeville had 18 assists while Mounts added 11 assists.

Concord will open the MEC Tournament Thursday in Wheeling, West Virginia.
