BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Freshman
Sydney Haynes was voted as the Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year as the Concord University women's cross country placed third at the MEC Championship Saturday morning at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
The Mountain Lions finished behind West Virginia Wesleyan who won the meet, and Wheeling Jesuit. CU tallied 68 points to Wesleyan's 35.
Haynes was named to the All-MEC First Team as she placed fifth to go along with her freshman of the year award. Haynes navigated the 6,000-meter course in 24:25, five seconds ahead of the next best freshman, WVWC's Madison Frame.
A trio of CU runners claimed All-MEC Second Team honors.
Junior
Bailey Knowles ran to 12
th-place finish in a time of 25:38. Sophomore
Aidan Payton followed right in behind in 13
th and 25:39. Junior
Karleigh Thompson came across in 17
th, stopping the clock at 25:57.
Fellow junior
Kenna Knowles just missed Second Team All-MEC as she was edged out by Wheeling Jesuit's Lindsay Scheffel. Knowles placed 21
st in the race.
Sophomore
Kate Golinsky (27
th / 27:46) and junior
Kaylin Kessinger (28
th / 27:53) rounded out the field of runners for the Mountain Lions.
The other awards were claimed by Wheeling Jesuit's Kesley Chambers (Runner of the Year) and West Virginia Wesleyan's Jesse Skiles (Coach of the Year).
CU will take a week off before heading to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania November 4.
