Concord Travels to Glenville State, Welcomes Wesleyan

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University women's basketball teams heads to Glenville State for a road matchup against the league-leading Pioneers 5:30 p.m. Wednesday before returning home to the Carter Center on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip against West Virginia Wesleyan.

OPENING TIP
Concord enters the game on the back of a two-game winning streak after defeating Shepherd and Bluefield State in back-to-back matchups.  Concord is 2-12 in MEC play after the win against Shepherd. 

Glenville State has won three in a row, entering the game with a 17-3 overall record and an 11-3 mark in conference games. 

West Virginia Wesleyan is 6-11 overall, with a 6-8 record in the MEC.   

DEFENSIVE EFFORT
Concord's effort on the defensive side of the ball has contributed to its past two wins. After giving up over 90 points in four of its last five games, the Mountain Lions clamped down on its last two opponents, holding their opponents to below 60 points in back-to-back games for the first time all season. 

The Mountain Lions also held BSC and SU to under 40 percent shooting, the first time it has accomplished that since they played West Virginia State and Bluefield State on November 15 and 19, 2016.

The last time Concord held three straight opponents to under 40 percent from the field was November 18th-23rd, 2015 against West Virginia State, Bluefield State, and Charleston. 

Junior guard Emily Boothe has nine steals through her last two games.

THREE-POINT RANGE
Concord is second in the league in three-point shooting at 36.8 percent, three points up from last season's total. at .33.8 percent

CU boasts three players that shoot over 40 percent from beyond the arc: Boothe (45.2 / 28-of-62), junior guard Lindsey Overbey (42.9 / 15-of-35), and senior guard Alexis Lowery (41.2 / 40-of-97). 

All three players have improved by at least 11 percent from three-point range from this year to last year.

 Boothe shot 34.9 percent last season, Lowery (24.7), and Overbey (22.2). Junior guard Danielle Catron is also shooting above the team average at 36.7 percent. Concord's 14 three-pointers against Bluefield State on Monday was the highest made by a Concord team since it made 15 against Ohio Valley on February 28, 2012.     


BALANCE SCORING
Concord's balanced scoring helped the Mountain Lions shoot their highest percentage of the season in a loss to Glenville State at home on November 30th. 

CU shot 48 percent from the field, scoring a then season-high 87 points.  

The scoring was from a different number of players as well for CU, with five different players reaching double figures. 

Catron led the way with 16 points off of the bench, while Lowery (12), Boothe (11), freshman forward Madison May (11), and junior center Alley Odell (10). 

The Mountain Lions nearly had seven reach double figures, as junior forward Heather Chapman and junior guard Lindsey Overbey each had nine. 

The balanced scoring has been a trend recently for Concord, with Concord having four players in double figures in four of its last five games. 

To start the game off against Shepherd, Concord had seven players contribute the first 14 points.     

BACK-TO-BACK
Concord has won two games in a row for the first time since November 14-18, 2015 in two contests against Bluefield State and West Virginia State. 

Some notable numbers during Concord's two game run includes back-to-back games of shooting 82 percent or more from the free throw line, two straight games of double-digit steals and two games in a row of forcing 14 or more turnovers from the opposition.  

In addition to the opponents' field goal percentage noted earlier in the last two contests,  Concord has won the rebounding battle in its past two games.  he Mountain Lions are 4-1 this season when out rebounding the opposition. 

SCOUTING GLENVILLE STATE
The high-octane Pioneers continue to lead the Mountain East in scoring at 97.9 points per game, over nine points higher than second-ranked West Virginia State. 

GSC is also outscoring its opponents by 22.6 points per game. 

The high-pressing Pioneers force over 15 steals per game,  and have attempted over two hundred more three-pointers than any team in the Mountain East Conference. 

Paris McLeod is second in the MEC in scoring, pouring in 18.7 points per game.  Courtney Davis leads the MEC in rebounding, pulling down 9.7 boards per game.   

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
West Virginia Wesleyan has lost three in a row, but before the three-game skid defeated MEC leader Glenville State at home, holding the Pioneers to their second-lowest point output of the season in an 87-75 win. 

WVWC has defeated top four teams Fairmont State and Glenville, but also has losses to 11th-placed Urbana twice. 

The Bobcats are limiting opponents to shooting just 29.7 percent from three-point land.  Rachel Vandertoolen and Mari Stewart each average over 13 points per game.   

Inside the Numbers
2-  May had two blocks vs. Bluefield State, the first multi-block game for a Concord player since Heather Chapman blocked two shots against GSC earlier this season.

9:1-  Assist-to-turnover ratio by senior guard Morgan against Bluefield State on Monday, the best assist-to-turnover ratio since a 6-0 ratio last season at Wheeling Jesuit.

+14-  Combined rebounding margin for Concord in its past two games.
