Concord Matches Up on the Road Versus West Virginia Wesleyan, Glenville State

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University men's basketball embarks on its last road trip of the season with four games away from Athens over a 10-day stretch beginning at West Virginia Wesleyan 7:30 p.m. Thursday before heading to Glenville State 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES

• CU enters the week with a record of 14-6 overall and 9-5 in the Mountain East Conference after a gritty 79-66 win over Shepherd at home.

• WVWC is 12-8 overall and 7-7 in the conference while Glenville State is 7-13 overall and 4-10 versus league foes.

• In the win over SU, senior forward Terry Hopewell collected a career-hihg 19 rebounds on his way to his 20th career double-double while senior forward Jametrius Wade pulled down 10 boards and scored 24 points.

• Concord owned a 50-31 rebounding margin against SU, a season-high.

• Additionally, Hopewell and Wade nearly outrebounded Shepherd on their own. Hopewell is second in the MEC in rebounding (11.3 per game) while Wade is ninth in rebounding (7.6 per game).

• Only NDC has a pair of teammates ranked in the top 10 in rebounding besides CU.

• Even though Concord wasn't as sharp offensively against the Rams, CU's ability to knock down foul shots and force Shepherd into tough shots until the offense started clikcing allowed the Mountain Lions to stay in the game.

• Concord held Shepherd to 36.4 percent shooting. It was the fourth time in the last five games, CU has held its opponent to 40 percent or less shooting.

• The last time Concord accomplished that was during the 2007-08 season when it held four consecutive opponents to under 40 percent shooting.

• The Mountain Lions dropped a 90-89 triple overtime decision on December 5 to West Virginia Wesleyan.

• Wade tied his career-high with 24 points while Hopewell added 19 points and 15 rebounds while connecting on 9-of-10 free throws, a career-high for makes for Hopewell.

• However, CU had success at Wesleyan last year as it came away with a 54-41 win.

• Junior guard Aaron Miller scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Concord held WVWC to 25 percent shooting which was lowest for a CU defense since 2012.

• While Glenville State took both regular season meetings last year from CU, but this year Concord will go for the season sweep of the Pioneers after winning 103-79 at the Carter Center on Dec. 3. Hopewell (17 points, 15 rebounds) and Wade (18 points, 11 rebounds) both had double-double while senior guard Rob Reed scored 23 points on 8-for-15 shooting.

• In a three-game sample versus GSC, Reed is averaging 19.6 points and shooting 55 percent (22-for-40) in his career.

• Meanwhile, Hopewell has found success against Glenville State as well, averaging 15.8 points and 8.8 rebounds in five career games that includes three double-doubles.

• Traditionally, head coach Kent McBride's Concord teams play its best during February.

• Concord has had at least six wins during the second month of the year in three of four previous seasons under McBride including a 7-2 mark last February.

• Dating back to last season, the Mountain Lions have won six straight February contests and won by an average of 15.1 points in those  games.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
4- Steals by Reed at West Virginia Wesleyan last season, a career-high.

13- Consecutive points scored by CU to end the first half and begin second half against GSC earlier this season.

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
• The Bobcats are 3-2 in their last five games after a five-game losing streak to start the month of January.

• Big man Tanner McGrew is not only the MEC leader in rebounds per game, but leads all of Division II in rebounds (13.0 per game).

• Earlier this season, McGrew had 27 points and 24 boards in the triple overtime game, but is shooting just 38 percenet (19-for-50) in his last three game versus CU.

• McGrew scores 21.4 points per game while Mo Berchie is the only other WVWC player to score in double figures (10.2 points per game).

SCOUTING GLENVILLE STATE
• GSC has lost seven of its last eight games, but did pickup a 103-89 win at Urbana last Thursday.

• The Pioneers are led by Sedric Nady who is 10th in the MEC in scoring at 18.0 points per game and also shoots 43.2 percent (57-for-132) from three-point range.

• Brett Morris also scores in double digits, averaging 14.4 points per game while blocking two shots a game, second in the conference.
