WINGATE, N.C. – The Concord University baseball team dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Wingate in non-conference action.
CU (0-5) fell 6-1 in the first game before losing the nightcap 12-6.
Game 1: Wingate 6 – Concord 1A two-run fourth and a run in the fifth was too much for Concord to comeback from after trimming a 3-0 deficit to 3-1 in the third.
Wingate opened up a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the second before sophomore outfielder
Andy Szamski singled in senior outfielder
Charles Goss in the third inning to eat into the deficit for the Mountain Lions.
However, the final three runs of the game went to the Bulldogs as Concord lost 6-1.
Szamski had the only multi-hit game for Concord in game one. Senior infielder
Holt Cassada, redshirt freshman infielder
Adrian Peralta, senior outfielder
Andrew Seigel, freshman infielder
Brett Simmons and redshirt freshman infielder
Trevor Wiersma each had one hit.
Senior pitcher
Chris Kelly tossed a complete game as he allowed five earned runs and struck out a career-high nine batters.
Game 2: Wingate 12 – Concord 610 combined runs for WU in the third and fourth innings was the difference in the game.
Concord got on the board first as Szamski's sacrifice fly scored Seigel in the top of the first inning as CU grabbed an early 1-0 edge. But, Wingate scored 12 unanswered runs to take a 12-1 lead after four innings.
The Mountain Lions mounted a comeback as Szamski singled home sophomore infielder
Chad Frazier in the fifth inning.
Frazier collected two of his own RBI in the sixth as Cassada and redshirt freshman first baseman / catcher
Jordan Clark scored on Frazier's base hit.
Seigel and senior infielder
Brad Sullivan each had an RBI in the frame, but a Concord rally was halted and CU fell 12-6.
Frazier and Seigel each had two hits in the nightcap. Frazier also scored two runs in a 2-for-3 effort.
Freshman pitcher
Troy Beckner (0-2) was charge with the loss. Fellow freshman pitcher
Reed McNeer recorded the final six outs against Wingate while only allowing one hit.
