ATHENS, W.Va- The Concord University women's basketball team begins Mountain East Conference Play when it hosts West Virginia State Saturday before traveling up I-77 to Charleston on Monday.
Concord stands at 1-2 on the season after picking up its first victory at Bluefield State on Tuesday night. Both Charleston and West Virginia State carry identical 1-2 records as well.Â

LOWERY'S RECORD NIGHT
Senior guard
Alexis Lowery eclipsed several personal bests to help lead Concord to a 84-56 victory over Bluefield State on Tuesday evening at Shott Gymnasium. Lowery poured in 25 points, which bested her previous career mark by 8 points.
Lowery also chipped in four steals on the defensive end, another career high. The Dandridge, Tennessee native also broke her previous high of field goals made and three-point field goals made.Â
Lowery's performance also came at an efficient clip as she nailed six three-pointers on just 12 attempts, while shooting 9-for-17 overall for the game.Â
Lowery's performance marks her fourth game in a row including exhibitions in which she scored double figures to open this season.
CRASHING THE GLASS
In Concord's win over the Blues, it outrebounded BSC by 22 to help Concord earn its first victory of the season.Â
In Concord's two contests previous to that, both losses, the Mountain Lions were outrebounded by a combined 16 boards.Â
Four of Concord's five wins last season came when it either outrebounded or tied the opposition in rebounding margin.Â
Sophomore forward
Courtney White was particularly effective at crashing the glass on Tuesday night, hauling in 10 rebounds for a new career-high against BSC. Â
Concord also had four other players nab five or more rebounds: Lowery (5), junior center
Alley Odell (5), freshman forward
Madison May (6), and junior guard
Lindsey Overbey (6).Â
Defensive EffortÂ
Concord held Bluefield State to 56 points on Tuesday, marking the first time Concord has held a team under sixty points since a matchup against BSC on January 26th of last season.Â
Concord also held the Lady Blues to 49 points in a win at home last season on November 18th.Â
In Concord's win on Tuesday night, it held BSC to just 32.1% shooting from the field, including a first quarter in which Bluefield State hit just 2-of-13 shots.Â
SPLITTING WITH THE YELLOW JACKETS
Against the Yellow Jackets last season in Institute, Concord was once again strong defensively, holding the Yellow Jackets to just 60 points in a 66-60 road victory.Â
Lowery's previous career-high of 18 points came in this game, while junior guard
Danielle Catron poured in 21 points on an efficient 9-of-13 shooting.Â
The Yellow Jackets got one back in Athens as WVSU grabbed an 86-57 road victory.Â
The all-time series record has been close as well between the two teams, with CU holding a 27-18 all-time advantage over West Virginia State, with Concord winning three of the last four matchups.      Â
SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA STATE
After a 1-2 start under first year head coach Charles Marshall, West Virginia State will bring its high octane offense that ranks second in the MEC in scoring at 93.7 points per game.Â
The Yellow Jackets rank last defensively in points given up per game, allowing 103.3 points per contest.Â
WVSU has shot 105 free throws through three games this season, converting at an 80Â percent clip.Â
Sydney Bates leads WVSU in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Â
SCOUTING CHARLESTON
Also off to a 1-2 start, Charleston ranks fifth in the Mountain East in scoring at 72.0 points per game.Â
The Golden Eagles dropped their first two contests against Chowan and Kutztown before earning a 20-point victory at home against Kentucky State.Â
Jordyn Peck ranks second in the MEC in scoring at 20 points per contest.Â
Abby Watson and Mya Walker average 13.3 and 12.7 points per game respectively.
