MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
CU is coming off a 21-7 defeat by the number three in the nation, Shepherd, in Week 8 of the season.
CU is 2-6 this season while GSC is 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the MEC.
The Mountain Lions stood tall on defense as they limited Shepherd to its lowest yardage (400) and point total (21) of the season.
The Maroon and Gray won the turnover battle 2-1 as junior defensive back
Jeremiah Johnson forced a fumble with junior linebacker
De'Aundray Gooden recovering the loose ball, and freshman defensive back
Ke'Shawn Hall intercepted his first career pass.
For Johnson, it was his second forced fumble this season--the other came at Fairmont State--and his third career fumble forced.
The Baltimore, Maryland native is now in a tie for seventh all-time at CU in fumbles forced.
Sophomore defensive lineman
Colton Neal tallied his second career two-sack game while senior defensive lineman
Darryl Johnson took down an opposing quarterback for the eighth time in his Concord career.
The other multi-sack game in Neal's career was on the road this season at Fairmont State.
D. Johnson moved into a tie for eighth on the all-time list for sacks at CU with assistant defensive line coach
Keith Ferguson and Dan Stone.
In all, the Mountain Lions tallied six tackles for loss (TFLs) with junior linebacker
Edwin Campbell, redshirt freshman defensive lineman
Noah Hancock and junior defensive back
Chaudlier Shepherd each adding one.
It was the fourth time this season Concord has had at least five TFLs in a game.
Senior defensive back
Akil Bordelon achieved a career-high 12 tackles against Shepherd.
Over its last 10 quarters of football, Concord has given up 49 points which is an average of 9.8 points per half.
This season, the Mountain Lions are fifth in the MEC in scoring defense (24.0), but has held the two highest scoring offenses in the league, Notre Dame and Shepherd to average of 17.5 points.
In the secondary, CU has given up the fifth-fewest touchdown through the air, 15, trailing only Fairmont State, Shepherd, West Liberty and Notre Dame.
Senior wide receiver
Davon McGill caught the lone score for Concord as he hauled in a 23-yard score from senior quarterback
Brian Novak.
After Saturday's performance, Novak needs 269 yards to eclipse 2,000 yards in a season for the third time in his career.
If Novak surpasses 2,000 yards through the air this season, it would be the 10th time in school history the feat has been accomplished with Novak owning 30 percent of the list.
Furthermore, Concord's signal caller needs to average 254 yards per contest over his final three in the Maroon and Gray to go over 10,000 for his career.
Heading into Saturday's game Novak has 9,238 passing yards for his career.
In his return to the Concord lineup against Shepherd, senior wide receiver
Jermeil Douse caught one pass for 19 yards.
However, the reception was crucial as it moved Douse to within 16 yards of 2,000 receiving yards for his career and also to within two receptions of tying Nathan Tanner for fifth on the career list at Concord.
The Mountain Lions lost a tight 30-25 decision last season at Glenville State as the Pioneers scored with 16 seconds left in the game.
In the contest, Novak was 14-for-24 with 204 yards through the air.
Novak also scrambled for an eight-yard touchdown run in the game.
Shepherd had a career day at cornerback for the Maroon and Gray at GSC last season.
The Upper Marlboro, Maryland native had the only multi-interception game of his career against Glenville State and the four pass break-ups Shepherd tallied remains a single-game best.
Senior defensive lineman
Kevin Pierre lived in the backfield at Morris Stadium last season as he racked up a career-high three tackles for loss.
As part of the 25 points put up by the Mountain Lions, four of them came via the safety.
On two occasions last season, Concord had multiple safeties in a game with one of them versus UVa.-Wise and the other at Glenville State.
A week after limiting SU's Billy Brown and CJ Davis to approximately 90 yards under their combined season average in receiving yards--the duo averages 217 yards--the Mountain Lions defensive backfield will be asked to shutdown Glenville State's Dante Absher (75.5 yards per game) and DJ Williams (67.7 ypg).
Coming into Saturday's game, the tandem is ninth and 10th respectively in the conference in receiving yards per game.
Quarterback Dante Roberts is second in the league, behind only Notre Dame's Malik Grove, in passing yards with 2,005.
The Pioneers' signal caller has thrown 20 touchdowns to just six interceptions in 2016 to go along with his 2,000-plus passing yards.
Roberts is also Glenville State's punter and averages 36.0 yards
The Pioneers are second in the league in interceptions with 14.
Nick Lopez and Earon Settles both have intercepted the opposing quarterback four times this season.
Because of GSC's high interception number, the Pioneers are second in the league in turnover margin (+9).
GSC has also recovered seven fumbles.
A CONCORD WIN WOULD...
A Concord win would give Concord's senior class its 18th home win.
A Concord win would give CU its third win over Glenville State in the last four meetings.
