MOUNTAIN LION NOTES• CU put the clamps on the Fighting Falcons, allowing just 201 yards of offense, to level its record at 1-1 this season.
• The win was also enough to bolster the Mountain Lions up a spot in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll.
• Concord moved from 22nd to 21st in the poll and is one of three teams from the region to be ranked in this week's poll.
• Slippery Rock lays claim to 18th while MEC rival Shephered is 20th.
• The 201 yards surrendered by the Mountain Lions was the fewest by a Maroon and Gray defense since Oct. 19, 2013 against West Virginia Wesleyan when they gave up a microscopic 181 yards.
• Additionally, CU held Fairmont State to 58 yards on the ground which was the fewest yards gained on the ground by a Concord foe since Nov. 9, 2013 when it held Notre Dame to 38 yards.
• CU boast the league's third-best rushing defense having only giving up 192 yards in two games and only 2.6 yards per carry.
• Senior linebacker
Austin Dotson led the defensive effort for Concord versus FSU as he registered a team-high nine tackles, putting him at 150 for his career.
• Dotson joins senior defensive lineman
Ervin Moore as the only active CU players to have 150 or more tackles in a career.
• Senior running back
Calvinaugh Jones led an efficient offensive performance for the Maroon and Gray as the Glen Burnie, Maryland native found the end zone twice and added 62 yards on 20 carries versus the Fighting Falcons.
• The next touchdown scored by Jones will be 25th career rushing score, making him one of three Mountain Lions to cross the goal line 25 or more times on the ground in a career.
• Against Fairmont State, sophomore kicker and kickoff specialist
Zack Keaton recorded three touchbacks which was a career-high for the Pearisburg, Virginia native.
• In fact, it appears Keaton is well on his way to shattering his season best for touch backs.
• Through two games, Keaton has five touch backs and had just 11 kick sail out of the back of the end zone a season ago.
• The Mountain Lions will be seeking to win a second straight matchup over Urbana when it heads to central Ohio Saturday.
• Last season, CU defeated the Blue Knights 50-20 at Callaghan Stadium on homecoming to pick up its first ever win over UU.
• Concord was able to score through the air, on the ground and defensively in last season's contest versus Urbana.
• Junior quarterback
Brian Novak finished the game 14-for-29 with 300 yards passing and four touchdowns while Jones added 106 yards and one touchdown on just 13 carries for the Maroon and Gray.
• Two of Novak's scores went to sophomore wide
TJ Smith, who tallied his first career multi-touchdown game versus UU.
• Fellow sophomore wide receiver
Jermeil Douse finished the contest with five catches for a career-high 155 yards and his own score while sophomore running back
Jamal Petty had the game's other receiving touchdown for the Mountain Lions.
• Senior linebacker
Brandon Martinez scored a defensive touchdown for Concord in what was CU's only defensive touchdown a season ago.
• Martinez ran a fumble recovery 41 yards back for a score.
• Senior kicker
Andy Ellington also booted a 52-yard field goal in the win over the Blue Knights last year which tied Ellington's own school record.
• In two games against Urbana in his career, the Winfield, West Virginia native is for 4-for-4 on field goals with makes fo 39, 40, 47 and 52 yards.
• Heading into Saturday's game, Novak needs 282 yards to record 6,000 passing yards for his Concord career.
• The College Park, Maryland native will become one of four Mountain Lions to accomplish the feat when he does surpass the 6,000-yard plateau.
• Not only has the CU rush defense been stellar in the early season, but pass defense ranks second in passing defense efficiency having interception more passes, three, than touchdown passes allowed, two.
SCOUTING URBANA• Meanwhile, Urbana also evened its record to 1-1 on the season with a last-second touchdown last week at West Virginia State.
• The win was the first career coaching victory for first-year UU coach Tyler Haynes.
• The Blue Knights rank first in the league in kickoff returns, averaging 29.2 yards per return.
• Wide receiver Kelly Carter leads the kickoff unit wtih 10 returns for 281 yards.
• In last week's win over West Virginia State, Trevon Saunders hauled in 153 receiving yards for Urbana which is the second most in a single game in the league this season, behind only Glenville State's Dante Absher.
• Senior linebackers Bo Keener and D'Gary Wallace are the MEC's top leading tackles after two weeks of action. Wallace leads the league with 30 tackles while Keener is just five behind at 25 stops.
• UU has the reigning MEC Defensive Player of the Week in Kevin Chapple who earned the award after he had 12 tackles, five tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and a two sacks against WVSU.
• Meanwhile, Wallace's 20 tackles against WVSU was an all-time MEC record for a single game.
