ATHENS, W.Va. – An 18-3 run during the third quarter allowed the Concord University women's basketball to pull away from Bluefield State Wednesday night at the Carter Center in non-conference play and win a score of 65-48.
CU improves to 1-2 on the young season while Bluefield State falls to 0-2.
After leading by one at halftime, 24-23, Concord found itself down 32-30 with 8:33 remaining in the third quarter. For the next seven minutes, CU pulled ahead of BSC and then opened up a sizeable 48-35 lead with 1:37 remaining in the third period.
The scoring run was well-balanced for the Mountain Lions as freshman guard
Emily Boothe hit two three-pointers, junior guard
Alexis Lowery scored five points, sophomore guard
Danielle Catron had three points and junior guard
Olivia Morgan and freshman forward
Jenna Holton each scored a bucket.
The Blues were able to cut the deficit to eight by the end of the third quarter, 48-40.
To start the fourth, CU went up by 12 after a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Marta Moix with 8:06 left in the contest, but the Blues quickly responded with five straight points.
However, over the final six minutes of the game Concord held BSC to one point and scored 10 of its own to pull away for a 65-49 win.
During the final stages of the game, the Mountain Lions forced two turnovers while the Blues missed their last five shots of the game.
CU forced Bluefield State into 33 turnovers on the night which is the most offensive miscues Concord has forced since the Mountain Lions forced Wheeling Jesuit into 29 turnovers two seasons ago on the road.
Of the 33 turnovers Bluefield had, Concord scored 29 points of them.
Catron and Morgan each had four steals for the game.
Catron led Concord in scoring with a career-high 19 points, the second time to start the season Catron has notched a new personal-best.
Morgan stuffed the stat sheet by scoring six points, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out eight assists and recording four steals.
Lowery also set a career-high with 11 points.
Senior forward
Kylie Molisee posted 12 rebounds for the Mountain Lions while also scoring six points.
The Mountain Lions held Bluefield State to single-digit scoring in the second and fourth quarter as they gave up five and nine points in those quarters while also posting a season-high 24 points in the third period.
Concord starts Mountain East Conference play 2:00 p.m. Saturday at West Virginia State.
