CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team lost its Mountain East Conference opener at Charleston Sunday afternoon, 3-1.

The early going in the contest was even, but it was Concord (0-3, 0-1 MEC) that tallied the first two shots on goal as sophomore midfielder Molly Watters had a shot saved in the ninth minute before senior defender Katie Garratt had her shot stopped in the 20^th minute.

UC (1-2, 1-0 MEC) went up 2-0 later in the first half with goals in the 36^th and 42^nd minutes.

After being outshot 11-5 in the first half, the Mountain Lions controlled a large portion of the second half, and found the back of the net in the 81^st minute.

Concord was able to gain possession at the half-field line with junior midfielder Stephanie Tovar sending a stretch pass to sophomore midfielder Daisy Cook who got in behind the defense and scored from the edge of the penalty area to the low left side of the goal.

With Concord pressing to find an equalizing goal, Charleston scored in the 86^th minute to go up 3-1.

Shots in the game finished even at 16-16. UC had a small 8-6 edge in shots on goal.

Watters led Concord in shots with six. Three of the four shots for Garratt were on goal. Junior defender Ella Rowell and junior forward Ailsa Swinburne both had a pair of shots in the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Kayla Garza notched five saves in the defeat.

The Mountain Lions open up the home slate 1:00 p.m. Wednesday versus West Virginia Wesleyan at Callaghan Stadium.
