INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was dealt a tough loss as it fell in five sets to Young Harris Saturday afternoon at the UC-WVSU Crossover Invitational.

Despite the Mountain Lions (3-5) winning the first two sets by a combined 13 points, CU was unable to close out YHC (6-1). The set scores were 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 15-25, 10-15.

Concord hit .227 in winning the first set 25-19, and was much more efficient in the second set with a .441 hitting percentage.

The Mountain Lions scored the first four points of the opening game, and led by as much as 11 points, 11-4, after a service ace by senior setter Haley Sweeney. Young Harris closed to within 17-14 before CU went on a 5-1 run that was finished off by a kill from senior outside hitter Meg Williams. The late-set run pushed Concord ahead 1-0.

Concord recorded 18 kills in the second set to go with the near-.450 hitting percentage. CU sizzled in the middle of the set as it turned a slim 13-11 advantage into a comfortable 20-13 cushion. Four different players had a kill in the run.

Looking for a sweep, the Mountain Lions could not put YHC away with neither team leading by leading by three points. Concord was the on right end of two attack errors as it pulled even, 22-22, but could not finish off the set.

Young Harris forced a fifth set, and the Mountain Lions never led in the decisive game.

Senior outside hitter Chloe Thompson notched a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs. Williams added her own double-double 11 kills and a season-high 17 digs. And Sweeney's 15 digs were part of her 23-assist, 15-dig double-double.

Sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins recorded 12 digs while senior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson went for nine kills.

Senior setter Paige Richmond chipped in 20 assists.

The Mountain Lions play their final non-conference road match of the season 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Pikeville.
