RIVALRY REKINDLED
Concord squares off with Charleston for the first time in 2026, after locking horns with UC three times a season ago. Concord managed a draw against the top-ranked Golden Eagles in the regular season finale, but Charleston won the other two meetings which includes the MEC Championship Game. Senior forward Dominique Malhomme scored both goals that the Mountain Lions netted against UC. Concord will search for its second ever win against Charleston in the capital city this Sunday.
OFF AND RUNNING
The Maroon and Gray have started the season with back-to-back positive results, a 2-0 victory over Virginia State and a 0-0 draw at Chowan. CU got off the mark with two goals in two minutes, the first coming by senior midfielder Daniel Rivers. The next goal came from the sophomore midfielder Koya Nakamura for his first Concord goal. Concord dominated the VSU in the shot column, 23-10 and Chowan 15-7, despite not being able to breakthrough against the Hawks.
NEW NETMINDER
CU has a new face in net with junior goalkeeper Iori Tanaka. Tanaka couldn't have started much better with two clean sheets in two games and taking home the Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Tanaka tallied seven saves through two games, including six against Virginia State.
DIVIDE THE MINUTES
Fourth year head coach Alex Smith has toyed with his lineup to kick off the season. Twenty-two different players have already seen game action for the Mountain Lions ahead of the start of MEC play. Of the 22 players that have entered, 16 are newcomers to the squad in 2026.
SCOUTING THE CHARLESTON GOLDEN EAGLES
Charleston is coming off an incredible season, posting a 17-1-4 record and reaching as high as #1 in the Division II polls. The Golden Eagles' only loss came against Southern New Hampshire University in the NCAA Tournament which ended their season. UC has some familiar faces in attack with Martin Echarren and Allan Logrillo coming back, but feature lots of changes in the midfield and defense.
SCOUTING THE WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN BOBCATS
After a rough 2025 that saw WVWC go 4-11-3, they haven't gotten off to a better start this year. They've fallen in back-to-back contests at home, losing 2-1 to Findlay and Salem. The Bobcats have goals from Axel Chilet and Jake Hotka through two games.
