Concord Handles Point Park in 2-0 Win

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team used a dominant second half to overpower Point Park 2-0 in Mountain East Conference action at Callaghan Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
 
After a quiet first half from both sides, Concord (5-1-2, 3-1 MEC) scored twice in the second half as the Mountain Lions became too much for Point Park (3-4-2, 2-3 MEC) to handle.
 
The first goal of the contest came via a penalty kick in the 57th minute.
 
Junior forward Lucas Costa and sophomore forward Louis Learoyd linked up on an attack as Learoyd was taken down in the penalty area, then Costa stepped up to the spot and rolled the penalty attempt into the bottom right corner.
                                           
The Mountain Lions doubled their advantage in the 64th minute. After gaining possession in the midfield, Learoyd held up play and delivered a beautiful ball to junior midfielder Keeyan Thomas who chipped the keeper for his first goal of the season.
 
Concord continued to keep Point Park on the back foot as the match finished with a victory for the Maroon and Gray.
 
The first half saw 11 combined shots as it took a while for the action to ramp up. The first chance came by Point Park which forced a save from junior goalkeeper Iori Tanaka in the 23rd minute.
 
Concord's major chance in the first half came off the boots of Costa in the 28th minute. Costa found a soft spot in the PPU defense and poked a ball headed for the bottom right corner that was saved by the Pioneers' goalkeeper.
 
The game remained scoreless entering halftime
 
Behind the two goals, CU attempted 13 of its 20 shots in the second half. For the game, the Mountain Lions had seven shots on goal.
 
Costa and Thomas each recorded four shots in the game. Freshman midfielder Josiah Ochoa took three shots.
 
Both saves for Tanaka came in the first half.
 
Concord travels to Wheeling for an MEC matchup Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
