FERRUM, Va. – The Concord University volleyball team overcame a slow start at Ferrum to take down the Panthers in four sets Wednesday night in a non-conference clash inside Swartz Gymnasium.

The set scores were 19-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-19.

After dropping the first set, Concord (2-3) had to hold off Ferrum in the second set. Concord built a 23-17 lead in the second game after a pair of Ferrum (2-1) errors. However, the Panthers came storming back to knot the set at 24-24 before a service error from FC, and a kill from senior outside hitter Meg Williams evened the match at 1-1.

The momentum carried over as the Mountain Lions took off just past the halfway point of the third set. Holding a slim 15-13 edge, Concord scored seven of the next eight points to build a 22-14 lead. Freshman middle hitter Mariah Moss capped the spurt with a kill. Senior outside hitter Chloe Thompson also threw in a pair of kills during the run.

In the fourth set, the last time CU trailed was at 4-3 before slowly pulling away from Ferrum. Up 15-14, sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins supplied a pair of kills to push Concord ahead 18-15. Later in
the set, senior setter Paige Richmond tossed in two kills, including match point, to help close out the Panthers.

Concord trailed throughout the first set as it never led. The Maroon and Gray got to within 18-16 after a kill from junior right Maddie Stull. But, Ferrum held off Concord to go up 1-0.

Adkins paced the offense with 13 kills and a .318 hitting percentage. She also had a team-best six blocks. Thompson notched 12 kills while Williams recorded her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Additionally, she went over 1,000 career digs in the match—the third player in program history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

Richmond (18) and senior setter Haley Sweeney (17) were the assist leaders for CU. Senior libero Allie Davis went for a team-best 15 digs.

Concord hit .194 in the match while holding Ferrum to .133, including less than .115 in the middle sets.

The Mountain Lions play the first of three matches at the UC-West Virginia State Crossover Tournament Friday at 1:00 p.m. against Roosevelt inside West Virginia State's Walker Convocation Center.
