ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team was defeated 41-38 against Charleston Thursday night in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.

The Mountain Lions (2-1, 0-1 MEC) lost on the final play from scrimmage as Charleston (1-3, 1-0 MEC) scored on a five-yard passing touchdown with two seconds remaining to steal a win from CU. On the ensuing kickoff, Concord was only able to advance the ball to the 45-yard line as time ran out.

Concord ran out to a 17-3 lead after junior running back Greg Burrell found the end zone with 9:35 remaining in the first half. The first of two touchdowns for Burrell came when he scooped up a fumble at the three-yard line and ran across the goal line.

UC responded by scoring the final 10 points of the first half, and extended the momentum by finding the end zone on the first possession of the third quarter, taking a 20-17 lead

However, Concord scored twice in just over two minutes later in the third quarter. Graduate quarterback Devin Kargman hit sophomore wide receiver Dom Collins in stride for a 45-yard score with 5:25 left in the third. Then, the Mountain Lions executed an onside kick, and sophomore running back Jayden Williams capped a short seven-play, 33-yard drive at the 3:08 mark with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

UC got to within 31-27, but CU had a response as Burrell barreled into the end zone on a four-yard rush to take the lead back out to 11 points, 38-27, with 6:55 left in the game. Charleston scored three minutes later, and got the ball back with just under three minutes left—scoring the final touchdown of the game.

Kargman was 16-for-28 for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Collins brought in a season-best seven receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. Junior wide receiver Cordale Russell had 71 receiving yards on three catches. Burrell finished with 67 yards on the ground while Williams had 57 yards on 10 carries.

Defensively, junior defensive back Ar'Terrian Godfrey racked up nine tackles for the second straight game and snared his first interception of the season, a pick on UC's first possession of the game. In his first start at Concord, junior defensive back Bradly Harris tallied eight tackles and a tackle for loss.

CU had seven tackles for loss in the game.

Concord recorded 387 yards of offense and averaged more than six yards per play, but allowed UC to run for 300 yards .

The Mountain Lions go on the road to face West Liberty Saturday, September 26.
