Concord Lifts Lid on Season with Four Matches at Rollins Invitational

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team gets its season underway Friday and Saturday at the Rollins College Invitational in Winter Park, Florida with four matches.

BACK IN FULL FORCE
Of the 1,400 kills that Concord racked up last season during its first 20-win campaign since 2002, CU returns 99.6 percent of the offensive production to this year's roster. Senior outside hitters Meg Williams (336 kills/3.03 per set) and Chloe Thompson (301 kills/2.71 per set) led the charge for Concord. Sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins had a stellar freshman season with 256 kills and 2.29 per set while junior right side Maddie Stull had a breakout year in tallying 216 kills with just under two per set (1.93). The two main distributors offensively for CU returns with senior setters Paige Richmond (635 assists/5.62 per set) and Haley Sweeney (427 assists/4.36 per set) back on the court. And defensively, senior Allie Davis was the second-best libero in the Mountain East Conference with 4.82 digs per set. Senior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson was top five in the league in blocks set (1.13).

RECORD WATCH
Individually, the Mountain Lions are seeking to break some career records this fall. Williams needs 351 kills to become CU's career kills leader as she starts the year fourth in program history with 1,119 kills. Thompson is 48 kills away from becoming the eighth player in Concord history with 1,000 kills. Davis needs 321 digs to become the all-time leader at Concord. She begins the season with 1,628 digs, and is just 16 away from the top three at CU. Richmond is 107 assists from 2,000 for her career. Previously, four players have reached 2,000 assists as a Mountain Lion. And with 225 career blocks, Anderson is less than 50 away from the top 10 at Concord.

EARLY SUCCESS
Since the start of the 2023 season, head coach Kate Dillon has gotten the Mountain Lions off to some fast start in the win column. In 2023, the Maroon and Gray was 4-0 after the opening weekend of play that translated into a 10-3 record after 13 matches. Two years ago, Concord was 0-6, but then went on a spree of winning six of its next eight matches to get to 6-8 before the bulk of conference play began. Last year, CU returned to its winning ways early in the season as it ripped off 10 straight victories over the first three weeks of the season before dropping a home match to Rollins in four sets. However, CU went 8-1 over the next nine matches after the Rollins loss.

CONCORD AGAINST THE FIELD
The Mountain Lions go into the opening weekend of the season without much knowledge of their opponents. Concord and Rollins played for the first time last season, and CU has only played Ursuline once, a sweep for the Arrows in 2018. Concord won the first set versus Rollins last season, 25-14, before the visitors got the next three. Thompson racked up 13 kills and a .393 hitting percentage. Adkins went for 10 kills while hitting .316. Anderson chipped in seven kills and three blocks. The Mountain Lions hit .179 in the match, but could not cool off Rollins who hit .301.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Southern Connecticut State advanced to the same round of its conference tournament as the Mountain Lions—the semifinals of the Northeast-10. The top hitter, Kerrigan Habing, returns for the Owls. Setter Kimi Mitchell was the NE10 Freshman of the Year as she averaged nearly 7.5 assists per set to go with more than two digs per set.

Rollins left Athens last season at 10-2 after the conclusion of the Concord Classic, but managed to win five matches the rest of the season in the highly-competitive Sunshine State Conference. Cameron Grange (2.77 kills per set) and Rylee Yarborough (2.01 kills per set) lead the offensive returners for RC. Libero Sarah Seabrooke (4.24 digs per set) also returns.

St. Mary's finished top five in the Lone Star Conference in 2025, but is forced to replace four of its top five hitters from last fall. Taylor Alston (2.34 kills per set) is the lone player that averaged more than a kill per set that is back on this year's Rattlers' roster. St. Mary's does bring back its top two setters from last year in Haleigh Wilk and Liz Salinas.

Ursuline is seeking to reverse last year's season that saw the Arrows go winless at 0-27. Ellie Zoeckler (128 kills) finished third on the team with 128 kills. Hannah Coleman had 52 kills in 47 sets played. Mya Jackson notched 2.27 digs per set.
