BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Kraig Gilbert of the Concord University men's basketball team and
Kennedy Scales of the Concord University women's basketball team have been nominated for Mountain East Conference Play of the Year.
Gilbert has been selected for MEC Play of the Year after his buzzer-beating three-pointer that helped defeat California (Pa.) in a non-conference game at the Carter Center, 81-79, in November. Gilbert grabbed a rebound off a missed Cal U free throw with 6.5 seconds left, and went the length of the floor before pulling up for a right wing three-pointer that sank the Vulcans, and lifted CU to a two-point win.
Scales is also up for MEC Play of the Year after a similar play in Concord's 73-71 victory at Charleston in mid-January. With the game tied, the Mountain Lions ran the clock all the way down as
Kenyah Stubbs found Scales in the short, left corner for a jumper as the clock expired that allowed Concord to complete the season sweep of Charleston.
Both Gilbert and Scales were the recipients of Concord Male and Female Play of the Year at the Second Annual Champions Gala in late April.
