GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team went 1-1 at Glenville State in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at the Sue Morris Sports Complex Wednesday evening, dropping the first game 5-4 before bouncing back with a 3-2 win in extra innings.
The Mountain Lions are now 20-22 this season and 10-14 in the MEC. Glenville State has a mark of 31-13 and 18-6 against conference foes.
Game 1: Glenville State 5 – Concord 4
Though CU built a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning, it was Glenville State that won game one.
Already responsible for one run in the game, senior infielder
Lacie Lewis followed a leadoff single by junior infielder
Kendall Morgan in the top of the sixth with her fifth home run of the season. It was the second straight game with a home run for Lewis which was also the 25
th of her career, tying her with her older sister Lauren (2014-17) for third on the all-time home list at Concord.
The 4-1 edge held up into the bottom of the seventh before GSU got within 4-3 with one out. The Mountain Lions were able to record the second out on a strikeout by junior pitcher
Josi Ervin, but the Pioneers had the game-winning, two-run single during the next at-bat.
To start the game, Glenville State score in the bottom of the first, but Concord had an immediate answer as an RBI double from senior catcher
Kayla Sholter brought in freshman catcher/infielder
Hannah Niten after her leadoff single in the second.
The Mountain Lions went up 2-1 in the third after Lewis bagged a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore
Blake Jamerson after she smacked a double to begin the frame.
Morgan and Niten were both 2-for-3 with a run scored. Lewis notched three RBI.
Ervin (1-1) was the pitcher of the record. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Reghan Hintz tossed the first six innings as she allowed three runs on three hits and struck out three.
Game 2: Concord 3 – Glenville State 2 (Eight Innings)
Lewis came through with a game-tying single in the seventh before CU scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to escape with a split.
Down to their last two outs in the game, Morgan drew a walk before stealing second base setting the stage for Lewis to come up with a clutch hit. The Kearneysville, West Virginia native laced a single to center field to bring Morgan around and tying the game.
Lewis advanced into scoring position later in the inning, but the game remained tied.
In the bottom of the seventh, GSU got the winning run to third, however, senior pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis induced an infield pop up and a fly ball to left field to send the game to extra innings.
Sholter led off the eighth with a double to center field, and raced home on a gap double to left center field by freshman outfielder
Grace Dodson with two outs.
Again, Glenville State had a surge in the bottom of the eighth as it had a leadoff single, and had runners stationed on the corners with two outs. Hollis produced a groundout to second base to end the game.
CU struck first in game two as Hollis helped herself with an RBI single to score Dodson in the top of the third. GSU came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Sholter was 2-for-3 with a double. Dodson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. Lewis was on base three times with the game-tying single to go with two walks.
Hollis (13-8) went all eight innings as she stranded 12 runners and struck out four.
The Mountain Lions return home to face Salem 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
