Concord Defeated by Frostburg State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team was clipped in two games by Frostburg State, 4-3 and 6-3, at the CU Softball Field Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play.

Game 1: Frostburg State 4 – Concord 3
The Mountain Lions (19-19, 9-11 MEC) had a late rally in the seventh inning fall short as it trailed 4-1 heading into the final frame.

Senior outfielder Alina Giles led off the seventh with a double to right center field, and was moved to third base on a bunt base hit by junior pitcher Josi Ervin. During the next at-bat, the pair executed a double steal that brought in Giles. Then, a sacrifice bunt pushed Ervin to third base. Ervin would score on a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Kendall Morgan, but FSU (31-5, 14-2 MEC) was able to record the final out of the game.

Frostburg State struck first with a two-out RBI single in the third inning. After holding the lead for an inning and a half, CU tied Frostburg State in the bottom of the fourth as senior infielder Lacie Lewis struck for a two-out RBI double to plate sophomore utility Kristy McCord.

However, the Bobcats came right back with a two-run fifth inning and added a tally in the sixth.

Ervin, Giles and Lewis accounted for the three Concord hits.

Senior pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis (12-7) allowed four runs and struck out three.

Game 2: Frostburg State 6 – Concord 3
Four unanswered runs by Frostburg State in the first three innings was too much for Concord to overcome in the nightcap.

Frostburg State plated a run in the second inning, but sophomore pitcher/outfielder Reghan Hintz was able to escape further damage as she snared a pop-up bunt –with the bases loaded—along the first base line and doubled off the runner at third base to end the threat.

But, the Bobcats got the runs back as they went up 4-0 in the third inning.

The Mountain Lions were able to strike in the fourth inning. Hollis shot a leadoff double down the right field line, and her pinch runner, freshman utility Mykah Gregory, would score later in the inning on a groundout. Down 4-1, CU wasn't done scoring in the inning as back-to-back errors kept the inning going and brought Giles in.

The deficit remained two until Frostburg State scored twice in the top of the sixth.

Like game one, the Mountain Lions had a rally in them in the seventh. Hintz's leadoff single was followed by a gap double to left center from Morgan. An error got pinch runner and junior outfielder Mikayla Hose home, but it was as far as CU got in the seventh.

Hintz (6-12) gave up four earned runs and struck out five in the circle.

Morgan was 2-for-4 at the top of the order.
