Concord Falters Against Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Fairmont State, 11-4 and 10-4, Sunday afternoon at the CU Softball Field in Mountain East Conference action.

Game 1: Fairmont State 11 – Concord 4
The game went back-and-forth until FSU (27-9, 15-3 MEC) scored seven times in the top of the seventh inning.

The Mountain Lions (19-21, 9-13 MEC) shot out to a 3-1 lead after one inning.

Junior infielder Kendall Morgan tripled to start the offensive day for Concord, and touched home on a sacrifice fly by senior infielder Lacie Lewis. With the game tied 1-1, the next two batters reached to restart the rally. A Fairmont State error brought in freshman utility Mykah Gregory before sophomore utility Kristy McCord raced home on a two-out RBI infield single from junior pitcher Josi Ervin.

The two-run advantage did not hold up, though, as the Fighting Falcons tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the second. And the deadlock remained until the bottom of the fourth when CU scratched across a run.

Senior catcher Kayla Sholter led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Now at third base, Sholter beat a throw home on a fielder's choice to restore a 4-3 edge. However, FSU answered quickly with a run in the top of the fifth.

Senior pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis was 2-for-4 in the game. Lewis was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Reghan Hintz (6-13) was the pitcher of record as she struck out five in seven innings.

Game 2: Fairmont State 10 – Concord 4
CU was unable to contain the Fairmont State offense as the Fighting Falcons got out to an 8-0 lead.

Gregory scored Concord's first run in the bottom of the third as she came in on a fielder's choice. The Mountain Lions cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth as Morgan's sacrifice plated sophomore utility Blake Jamerson. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the lead was reduced to 8-3 after Jamerson had her own sacrifice fly that brought in senior outfielder Alina Giles.

The final Concord run came in the bottom of the sixth when Lewis smacked her fourth home run of the season which was also her 24th career homer at CU.

Hintz finished the nightcap 2-for-3. Giles, Jamerson and Lewis all reached base twice.

Hollis (12-8) was charged with the loss in three innings of work.

Concord visits Glenville State 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in a midweek conference doubleheader.
