Concord Continues Winning Ways with Four-Game Sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan with wins of 7-3 and 11-5 Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.

Concord is 16-21 overall and goes to 10-8 in MEC play after Sunday's victories. WVWC is now 9-29 overall and 4-14 against the MEc.

Game 1: Concord 7 - WV Wesleyan 3
CU scored at least one run in four straight innings to start the game and controlled the Wesleyan offense to start the day with a win.

The Mountain Lion offense got working right away in the first inning. After junior infielder Nick DiSanti scored on a throwing error, senior outfielder Dawson Gragg knocked in another with a single into right field to double the lead to 2-0. Senior outfielder Korbin Bostic followed the Gragg RBI single by hammering a ball through the right side to bring home Gragg and make it 3-0 in Concord's favor.

Senior infielder Sam Stowe kept the scoring going in the second inning as he led off the frame with his third home run of the year.

In the bottom of the third, Bostic came back up and powered his own solo shot over the right field fence for his seventh long ball of the year as Concord took a 5-0 lead.

Scoring in seven straight innings dating back to Saturday's second game against the Bobcats, Concord plated another in the bottom half of the fourth. Senior infielder Matthew DiSanti knocked a single into left field, scoring Stowe and giving CU a comfortable 6-0 lead.

WVWC broke up senior pitcher Kerry Collins' shutout bid in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, but Concord got a run back in the bottom half on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Lucas Cannon.

The Bobcats tacked on one run in the top of the seventh, and had the tying run on deck. However, freshman pitcher Elijah Green entered with two outs and shut the door for his first career save.

Concord totaled 11 hits as a squad with M. DiSanti, Bostic, Cannon and freshman outfielder Jared Lavergne each having two-hit games. Bostic and Stowe each hit home runs, with Bostic leading the team with two runs driven in.

Collins (2-3) secured his second victory behind an efficient start. The right-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs, while punching out a season-high six batters.

 Game 2: Concord 11 - WV Wesleyan 5
Trailing 5-4 after two innings, Concord scored seven straight runs including six runs in the fifth inning to record its straight four-game sweep to start MEC South Division play.

With the game tied into the bottom of the fifth, 5-5, the Mountain Lions had seven straight batters reach base with two outs. Bostic and junior infielder Maynard singled to spark the rally. Lavergne followed with his third hit of the game to score Bostic, giving CU a 6-5 edge. Now with the bases loaded, Stowe ripped a ball up the middle to bring home two more. After a hit by pitch re-loaded the bases, M. DiSanti cleared the sacks with a double to the left center field gap as Concord took a commanding 11-5 lead.

Game two opened with Concord once again taking an early lead. Maynard knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the first before Lavergne brought home two more with a double to center field, making it 4-0 Concord.

Despite the hot start, the Bobcats rallied back against Concord, scoring five runs in the top of the second to snatch the lead.

Senior pitcher Logan Darrow came out of the bullpen to toss 3.2 innings of shutout relief. In all, Darrow, graduate pitcher Joe Hastings and freshman pitcher Rocco Fizzano combined to throw 5.2 innings while not allowing a run and just three hits to the WVWC offense. Darrow (2-2) was the winner as he allowed three hits and out three in 3.2 innings.

M. DiSanti, Maynard and Lavergne each finished with three hits in the contest. M. DiSanti and Lavergne topped the charts with three runs driven in each. Maynard and Stowe each drove in a pair.

The Mountain Lions play their final non-conference game of the season Tuesday against Emory & Henry at Anderson Field at 2:00 p.m.
