OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team is set for a quarterfinal round matchup with Fairmont State in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia.

LAST TIME OUT
In the regular season finale against Glenville State, Concord fell in heartbreaking fashion, 73-72. The Mountain Lions trailed by nine points after the first quarter in Glenville. They responded with one of the best quarters of the year, outscoring GSU 29-8 in the second quarter. Six different Mountain Lions scored in the quarter, and CU shot 61.1 percent from the field in the second. After another good quarter in the third, Concord led by 14 points entering the final 10 minutes. The Pioneers rallied late and hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to edge the Mountain Lions. Concord was led by senior forward Abbie Smith with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs finished with 17 points, six boards and four assists. Freshman guard Cadence Blackburn poured in 11 points off the bench and senior forward Olivia Ziolkowski netted 10 points.

CONFIDENT AND READY
Despite the loss, Concord can take a lot of confidence and momentum into the conference tournament. On the season, Concord defeated every MEC opponent other than Glenville State whom they lost to buy a combined six points in two meetings. CU has two wins over 20-win opponents (Lock Haven and Fairmont State). The Mountain Lions have swept five separate opponents on the year (Charleston, Davis & Elkins, Point Park, Salem and West Virginia State). Concord enters the tournament with its most successful season under head coach Tesla Southcott, securing 18 wins which are also the most since 2021-22. Concord's top-four finish in the MEC is the highest under Southcott in her four years as the head coach.

TAKE A BOW
The end of the regular season proved fruitful for Concord as the Mountain Lions secured some major accolades. Smith was named the MEC Player of the Year, one of just three Mountain Lions in program history to win the award. Smith is one of the best players to ever suit up in the Maroon and Gray, currently sitting at third in all-time scoring (1,894) and rebounding (1,117) within the program. The Little Hocking, Ohio native averages 18.8 points per game (MEC second). She ranks first in rebounds per game (10.8), field-goal percentage (56.6), free-throw percentage (85.8), and double-doubles (17). Stubbs was named to the All-MEC First Team after an excellent season. Stubbs finished seventh in scoring and in the assist column, averaging 15.8 points per game and 3.5 assists per game. Stubbs ended the season with seven 20-point games and finished in double figures in all but five contests.

SETTING THE SHOW
Concord enters the MEC Tournament with the third ranked scoring offense, netting 76.9 points per game. On the defensive side, they allow 71.0 points per game. The Mountain Lions shine in terms of efficiency. They shoot 44.5 percent from the field (second in the MEC) and hold opponents to 38.7 percent shooting. From beyond the arc, CU is hitting three-pointers at a 32.3 percent clip whereas opponents shoot just 28.9 percent. Concord is the only team in the MEC that ranks in the top four of team field goal percentage, opponent field percentage, team three-point percentage and opponent three-point percentage. Fairmont State wants to create havoc, forcing 25 turnovers per game which ranks 10th in Division II. The Fighting Falcons love to get to the foul line, leading the MEC in both makes (436) and attempts (656).The Fighting Falcons love to get to the foul line, leading the MEC in both makes (436) and attempts (656).

SEASON SPLIT
Concord and Fairmont State meet in the epitome of the four versus five matchup as it should be an extremely close contest. The two teams split the regular season series with each home team coming away with the win. Last time in Athens, Concord rolled to an 89-58 win over the Fighting Falcons during the second week of February. It was one of Concord's best showings of the year, led by Blackburn's career high 24 off the bench. Junior guard Alexis Frazee added 14 points and eight assists off the bench. Stubbs had one of her three double-doubles for the year with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Concord shot a blistering 57.6 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from downtown. On the other side, the Mountain Lion defense was stifling as Fairmont State shot just 27.3 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from deep. The 31-point win was the second largest margin of victory in the season.

LAST TRIP TO WESBANCO
Concord's last game in the MEC Tournament was a heartbreaker as the Mountain Lions fell to Frostburg State 94-87 in overtime. Smith finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks in the game but it wasn't enough. That was the last overtime game that Concord has played in. Under Coach Southcott, Concord has made two MEC Semifinals (2023 and 2024). The Mountain Lions have only four players that have appeared in MEC Tournament games, Smith, Stubbs (while at Glenville State), Frazee and senior guard Kennedy Scales. Under Coach Southcott, CU is 3-3 all-time at WesBanco Arena, and in the seven previous MEC Tournaments held in Wheeling, the Mountain Lions have won at least one game four times.

Led by All-MEC First Team guard Gabby Reep, Fairmont State finished the year with a 20-8 record. Last time out, FSU cruised past Frostburg State with a 90-66 victory at home. In that game, the Fighting Falcons posted six scorers in double figures. Haylen Cook (11.1 points per game) and Alana Tate (10.1 points per game) also net double figures as Reep ranks 12th in the MEC in scoring at 14.3 points per game.
