WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Concord University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Wheeling, 3-2 and 2-1, Monday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at EQT Park.
Game 1: Wheeling 3 – Concord 2
Despite Concord (8-20, 2-8 MEC) scoring first, it was Wheeling (21-6, 10-2 MEC) that grabbed a late lead as CU lost by a run.
The Mountain Lions wasted no time in scoring as they got a run across in the top of the first inning. Senior infielder
Matthew DiSanti was hit with two outs, and came around to score on the first career double by freshman outfielder
Jared Lavergne.
WU plated two runs in the third to grab a 2-1 edge, and the deficit remained a run for the Maroon and Gray until they tied the game in the top of the fifth inning.
Senior catcher
Austin Hear led off the inning with a triple to center field. During the next at-bat, sophomore utility
Braylen Baker just missed a home run, but his deep fly ball to left brought in Hear to square the game at 2-2.
Wheeling had an answer in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Concord did throw out a runner at home plate as the Mountain Lions squashed a double steal attempt by the Cardinals to keep the deficit at 3-2.
CU got the tying run to third in the sixth, but was unable to get even with Wheeling late in the game.
Senior pitcher
Kerry Collins (1-3) allowed two earned runs over four innings. The Mountain Lion bullpen allowed just two hits in two scoreless innings of scoreless relief, including junior pitcher
Jake Robinson striking out four batters in 1.2 innings.
Hear and Lavergne had two of the three hits for Concord.
Game 2: Wheeling 2 – Concord 1
A late rally by the Mountain Lions came up just short.
Concord outhit Wheeling in the game, 7-3, but it was the Cardinals that struck first by recording two of their three hits for the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs in the frame.
CU broke its seal on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning as DiSanti and senior outfielder
Korbin Bostic led off the inning with back-to-back singles. With runners on the corners, Lavergne beat out an infield single that brought in DiSanti. The rally, though, was extinguished by Wheeling.
The Mountain Lions had a chance to score in the third inning as two of the first three batters reached via base hits.
Hear was 2-for-3 while five other players recorded a hit in the contest. DiSanti was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior pitcher
Logan Darrow (0-2) went four innings as he allowed two runs on two hits to go with two strikeouts.
The Mountain Lions travel to Emory & Henry for a non-conference tilt 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.
