ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University softball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Mountain East Conference foe Davis & Elkins at the CU Softball Field.
Â
Concord (15-11, 5-3 MEC) shut down Davis & Elkins (7-23, 3-5 MEC) in a 2-0 affair. The Senators rallied late in game two to take game two, 2-1.
Â
Game 1: Concord 2 - Davis & Elkins 0
The Mountain Lions produced enough offense in the game one, and senior pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis did the rest in the circle.
Â
In the bottom half of the first inning, Concord capitalized on a Senators' error with some aggressive baserunning. After stealing second base, junior infielder
Kendall Morgan scored from second on a dropped fly ball.
Â
D&E threatened as it loaded the bases in each of the first three innings, but Hollis found her way out of it each time to keep the Mountain Lions ahead 1-0. Â
Â
Hollis helped her own cause in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double down the right field line to score Morgan after she had reached base on a second Davis & Elkins error in the game.
Â
Hollis kept getting sharper as the game went on, tossing a 1-2-3 sixth and seventh inning to secure the victory.
Â
Hollis had the lone RBI with her bat as senior infielder
Lacie Lewis and senior catcher
Kayla Sholter each picked up hits. Morgan scored both runs for the Mountain Lions.
Â
Hollis (9-4) racked up her third complete-game shutout of the season. She allowed six hits, walking and striking out a pair.
Â
Game 2: Davis & Elkins 2 - Concord 1 (Eight Innings)
CU started on the front foot in back-to-back games. Sophomore infielder
Kristy McCord laced a single to the opposite field to score Morgan as Concord took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Â
However, D&E got a run across in the sixth inning to tie the game before going ahead in the top of the eighth.
Â
Sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Reghan Hintz continued her hot streak in the circle as eight of the first 12 outs she recorded were strikeouts.
Â
The top of the sixth saw D&E tie up the ballgame at 1-1 with a two-out single. However, Hintz escaped further scoring by recording her 10
th strikeout, a new career high, for the final out of the sixth. Â
Â
After a scoreless seventh inning for both teams, the game was heading to extras.
Â
The Senators broke the tie with a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning to take a 2-1 advantage.
Â
Despite two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning, Concord was unable to tie or win the game.
Â
McCord was the only Mountain Lion with multiple hits. Morgan, Hollis, Sholter and freshman catcher/infielder
Hannah Niten each finished with a single.
Â
Hintz (5-7) was tagged with the loss in a career effort. She went eight innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned)and punching out 10.
